Cherry Lane Lyrics
Every night I read this novel about you
Holding roses in the pouring rain
But the ending's tore up, trying to hail a cab
Think no one can read you, but I can
Well, we move into a house down on Cherry Lane
And watch the world go by
I'm missing a page
I wanna be the one who walks you home
Who walks you home tonight
Stare into her eyes and then try and explain it
It's written in a language
That was meant to fuck you up
But I can never get close enough
But I lie
But I lie down on her pillow
And you feel like you was going away
Going away when you got no place to go
But back in her arms lying on her pillow
Curled up with a book down on Cherry Lane
The glass it hits the floor and you're walking away
But I wanna be the one who walks you home
Who walks you home anyway
Stare into her eyes and then try and explain it
Try and explain it away
I wanna be the one who walks you home
Who walks you home tonight
Stare into her eyes and then try and explain it
Try and explain it
But this shit just fucks you up
And I can never get close enough
I can never get close
I can never get close enough
I can never get close enough to you
To you
Holding roses in the pouring rain
But the ending's tore up, trying to hail a cab
Think no one can read you, but I can
Well, we move into a house down on Cherry Lane
And watch the world go by
I'm missing a page
I wanna be the one who walks you home
Who walks you home tonight
Stare into her eyes and then try and explain it

Agree with noyes....a beautiful song, and already one of my favourite Ryan tracks. The "I can never get close enough" part towards the end is incredible.
To me it's about a guy who is in love with a girl from afar, and the song is about him imagining what it would be like if he were with her and if they "moved into a house down on Cherry Lane".
"Stare into her eyes and then try and explain it It's written in a language That was meant to fuck you up"
But he obviously can never find the right words to tell her what he feels or "get close enough".
"Curled up with a book down on Cherry Lane The glass it hits the floor and you're walking away"
Those lines are the most interesting, to me it says even if he did realise his dream he would somehow thinks he would fuck it up anyway and she would end up walking away from him.
LOL, that's my interpretation of it anyway but it's probably totally wrong!
AMAZING song however. Ryan is a genius.
there's so many different parts to this song, starts out like he's singing in a honkytonk bar, then moves into a haunting ballad, then speeds up towards the end with the incredible aforementioned refrain of "I could never get close enough, to you" - at this point feels more like a confirmation, a sense of finality. Then a wonderful guitar part wraps it up like a bow on a Christmas Present. There's nobody like the talented Mr. Adams
This song is just awesome. I agree with the "I could never get close enough to you" party being fabulous especially when he really belts it out. I agree with SarahSpacey on the meaning as well and I feel like I've been in a "a house down on Cherry Lane" for the last year or so, unfortunately and fortunately. Someone else on another page said that RA makes hurting over love sound so good. I think he so perfectly captures that conflict, the best and the worst emotions humans can feel, that's the package deal when you can't have The One.

WORD.
WORD.
for me it's about something different. It's about being in a relationship with a girl he lives with but can't get to the next lvl of a real partnership and companion with or he is just doesn't know what 2 do next.
he could "read" her every night but after a certain point he's missing the end of the novel, there is a limit to how much he can learn and understand about her even though he is better at it than eny1 else .
B4 they move 2gether -she needs 2 get home, looking 4 a cab, holding a rose like at the and of the date.
After tht they move 2gether where they r just the 2 of them , where he feel this is not enough for her (you're walking away). He rather be there and continue to try and understand her.
Again, he can understand her to a certain extant but she is not opening her self up so he cant get any closer and this is wht “fuckes him up” and he doesn't know how 2 explain him self 2 her tht he wants to take another “step” towards her, tht he still wants to protect her and be the guy for her : “walk her home” just like after the date at the beginning.
beautiful song.
This is such a great song! I agree with sarah spacey's interpretation. The guy is dreaming of this one girl who he feels he can never get close to. She feels like no one understands her, but the guy knows exactly who she is, he just doesn't know how to tell her. He has this fantasy that maybe they'll live this fairy tale life together on cherry lane, but he realizes it won't happen and the glass breaking represents his waking from that fantasy. Yet still he wants it. I dont know if thats what he intended the song to mean, but I love it no matter what...and that's what it means to me.
Is there something seriously wrong with me if I say that I want some guy to dedicate this song to me? It's so perfect
i think there are two women in this song "her" and "you."
he lives w/ her in a cozy little house on cherry lane. he lies next to her. and he lies to her - tries to look into her eyes and explain "you" away.
but "you" is the woman he still wonders about and wants, is the book left unfinished, the one who will always be w/in sight but just out of reach.
I don't really dig the first part of the song but the end of it: wow!! it just makes me want to crawl out of my skin it's so perfect. I think the way he repeats that line ' i can never get close enough' makes sooo powerful.
i agree with alot of people here. but this song also seems like its talking about how he is together with someone. but missing someone else. "im missing a page" etc. and the beginning about how the endings all torn up, like it wasnt suppose to be like this..etc. well i love this song and ryan adams is just amazing.
