Easy Plateau Lyrics

Let's take a ride to the easy plateau
Where the cold don't come and the wind don't blow
Moonlight flickers on the water below
The orange grove blossoms
In the orange grove
Bad nights lead to better days
It doesn't matter but I think about it anyway
I want an easy plateau
Some place to rest my head
I want an easy plateau
Some place to rest my head
For a while
For a while
For a while
For a little while
Sleepyhead, come on let's take a ride to the easy plateau
In the back of your mind
Go up through the alley, take the door under the stairs
My head ain't filled with nothing but cats and rocking chairs
Bad nights lead to better days
It never happens but I think about it anyway
I want an easy plateau
Some place to hang my head
I want an easy plateau
Some place to hang my head
For a while
For a while
For a while
For a little while
How will I hold on to you
If I can't hold on to me
How do I hold on to you
I want an easy plateau
Some place to rest my head
For a little while
I want an easy plateau
Some place to rest my head
I want an easy plateau
Some place to rest my head
Easy plateau

Cover art for Easy Plateau lyrics by Ryan Adams

This is all about escapism. Check the California imagery, the romanticizing about chilling out and compare it to where the singer is now...living in the city (evidenced by the alley), bad nights and not being able to love anyone else because he can't love himself.

It would seem easy to just say this song is about getting high but I think it can also cover any form of escapism.

i hadn't listened to 'cold roses' in a while so i popped it in the other day, then looking over the singles from the album, as 'easy plateau' was released as a single. i don't know how i didn't realize this, but if you look at the cover of the single, not only does it it have a religous symbolism (mary) but it also looks similar to the shape of a woman's vagana. similar to the symbolism in kings of leon's album 'aha shake heartbreak'. i see the escapism angle for sure that supposablethumbs suggests, but now i feel it also could have another, much more sexual meaning, especially these lyrics: "sleepyhead, come on let's take a ride to the easy plateau in the back of your mind. go up through the alley, take the door under the stairs, my head ain't filled with nothing but cats and rocking chairs..."

thinking about it, i really can see this as a much more complex and raunchy song about oral fixation.

huh! never thought of that. but you're totally right...

...go up through the alley, take the door under the stairs

Wow you are so right, very explicit instructions really. Thanks for posting, NEVER would have thought of that!
