Understanding Salesman Lyrics
A knock at the door means
Hello Jesus calls
A ring on the phone means
A trip to Niagara Falls
Daddy don't let me down this time
I'm all alone inside my mind
And it's no small thing
That I must prove to you
A late night card game
With the guys is alright
But I would rather
Take you for a test drive
Daddy don't let me down this time
I'm all alone inside my mind
And it's no small thing
That I must prove to you
While I look out on the passing fields
The sun through the bugs on the windshield
Makes me feel like I don't matter
A knock on the door means
Hello Jesus calls
A ring on the phone means
A trip to Niagara Falls
Hello Jesus calls

I'm all alone inside my mind
And it's no small thing

It's "Salesmen." Plural. I'm just sayin'.
It is?
I'm not quite seeing the "obvious" part of it.
I like explaining obvious things.
Firstly title: understanding salesman (a guy courting some girl)
He's all by himself with honest intentions, but he has to sell himself to prove that. He'd rather spend time (well, lots of time) with a girl. But he's just a bug on the windshield to most women. So he thinks he does not matter (to women again I guess).
That's my interpretation, of course most of e's stuff seems to be sad pathetic romantic guy type stuff.
He's talking to God. Daddy is God.
He's trying to find spirituality and acceptance in a world where everyone is trying to sell something (knock on the door- spiritual salesman, rings on the phone - material salesman).
it's quite obvious what this means.
