In The Yard, Behind The Church Lyrics

In the yard behind the church where
Butterflies and blackbirds search for
A safe place to rest the night away
We will go down to the brook and
Sit upon the overlook then
Forget about the troubles of the day

We will walk among the graves of
Men long dead with presidents names on and
Listen to the water flow softly by
I will kiss you on the lips now
And as the sky grows dark we'll strip down
And let the water wash away our lies

In the yard behind the church where
Butterflies and blackbirds purch on
Gravestones as the garden's growing dim
We will lay down on the ground and
Put our cheeks against the dirt down
Where it no longer matters where you've been

Maybe not a "family" picnic. They are getting naked, after all...

Why in a graveyard though? I was thinking maybe because that's where you are not judged for what you've done in the past. Death, the common fate of all humans, sweeps away the memory of long lost souls. Don't know if that makes sense, but oh well, that's my two cents.

I think that's probably right. The narrator is in a graveyard with the one he loves, and all that matters is that they're alive and together. The graveyard reminds him that that's what is most important.

I believe that you guys are overanalyzing the symbolism of the graveyard.

While it COULD mean that he is making a contrast between dead people, and his quite alive and loving relationship, I believe this is not the case.

Have you ever walked through a graveyard on a sunny day? I don't know about your cemetaries, but there a couple in my neighbourhood, both of them are quite beautiful.

I imagine his setting as more of a park, or a clearing in a forrest, with a creek and tombstones, rather than a dark and dreary place where zombies are likely to rise from their graves.

Speechless!!

the song has sufficiently blown my mind.

to me, it's about rebirth; what's happened has happened, its done and their cleansing themselves of it. self-baptism, starting anew with the person you love. it's about being able to move on to your new life.
