Gloomy Sunday Lyrics

Sadly one Sunday
I waited and waited
with flowers in my arms
all the dream has created
I waited till dreams,
like my heart, were all broken
The flowers were all dead
and the words were unspoken
The grief that I know
was beyond all consoling
the beat of my heart
was a bell that was tolling

Saddest of Sundays

Then came a Sunday
when you came to find me
they bore me to church
and I left you behind me
My eyes could not see
what I wanted to love me
the earth and the flowers
are forever above me
The bell tolled for me
and the wind whispered ''Never!''
but you I have loved
and I'll bless you forever

Last of all Sundays

Incredibly powerful. Such a powerful voice, you really feel the pain.

My Opinion

I like the other lyrics better - the one mostly going with this song (for example Heather Nova)

I love this song

Interesting version, different meaning, I personally prefer this one. Whereas Billie Holiday (etc.)'s version describes someone committing suicide to be with their deceased lover, this version (in my opinion) tells the tale of being in love with someone, and believing they feel the same way, only to have your dreams shattered when it turns out they don't, and taking your life because you were (and always will be) so madly in love with them. Very tragic song.

Took a while, but it grew on me. The lyric changes are even more disappointing than in the Billie Holiday version though. She's so dark, I'm surprised that she kinda copped out. She could have made it into a real wrist slitter. Too bad. Also, she sounds like Nico on steroids.

I’ve read that she recorded this song after her beloved brother passed from AIDS. She definitely took a dark path with this version. And Billie Holiday’s producers demanded the extra verse about “I was only dreaming” because the original was just too depressing for radio at that time...and probably still is.
