The chorus comes from the Salem witch trials. This woman, Sarah Good, was standing trial and when the Reverend tried to get her to confess, she said, "I am no more a witch than you are a wizard, and if you take away my life, God will give you blood to drink." Supposedly that reverend had an internal hemorrhage 25 years later and drowned in his own blood.
I think John's kinda implicitly saying that this girl is his life and this new guy is taking that from him. It's a bitter curse he's hurling at this guy. Pretty powerful line given its historical context.
This song nicely adds an epic, over-the-top feel ("god will give him blood to drink") to a very, very high school scenario (uh oh, he saw a girl he likes holding hands with another guy at the ice rink!). Because high school is when you're most prone to see your dramas as epic and over-the-top, honestly.
Ok so I was talking to my brother about this song last night. When he aske me what I thought some of lyrics may mean. He thought that the line "god will give him, blood to drink" was about him hopping he would be confronted by the new boyfriend and get to punch him in the mouth. I disagreed and offered this response: I think the lines,
"saw the two of you leaving didn't want to follow behind but i could see the rest of your evening Burrning in my mind"
speekas to him seeing the girl he loves with the new guy and him just waving her off as a lost cause while the following little chourus:
"god will give him blood to drink"
is his hope that the new guy goes down on her while she is one her period. Which makes him smile.

A man being hanged says that to his accuser who is hanging him on claims on witchcraft but he really wants his land. The accuser is latter mysteriously murdered. God did give him blood to drink. It's funny to see that line in this context. I love the Mountain Goats and their grasp on fine literature.
