Forecast Fascist Future Lyrics

The language of the frost
Lobs dead balloons over ruins today
In view of wan wordless crowds
That chase waifs to spires with fiery plumes
And incite the firmament's portrait of "A Drowning in Styx"
That gives impotents kicks

Boredom murders the heart of our age
While sanguinary creeps take the stage
Boredom strangles the life from the printed page

Masking vapor trails from Mercury
For a killer on Umbria who crippled birch mares
Now briars replace their old cotton limbs
Who will tell? I mean, would it make a difference?
Look, metal flower petal
Tears do not even appear in the Myopic Mirror

The moon was sagging in the sky
As I held her face to mine
All our thoughts were coming in so clear
Beyond the Myopic Mirror
We were darting from the place where we just couldn't fit
For away from all the violence safely flying in our own orbit

Why do I always have to tell you
"Forget about the prescient signs"?
Forget about the life we knew
May we never be stripped of anything we love
May we grow so gentle, never go mental
May we never go, go mental
May we always stay, stay gentle

What was my number?
114395?
I don't care!
No, no, no, no, no

This song really crystallized my previously nebulous thoughts about the merits of staying gentle, and conversely, the downside of going mental.

the best part of the song is when kevin sings "impotence kicks" with that little echo touch, very nicely done

my favorite part is either that last "no" or the "impotents kicks". I can't decide. Either way, I love this song.

2 words that sum this song up are Fahrenheit 451. Its pretty much about the limiting of thought in a fascist controlled government.

"In view of wan wordless crowds that chase waifs to spires with fiery plumes"

To paraphrase, it is saying that emotionless/wordless crowds chase the homeless/abandoned into burning buildings, fitting the picture of a burning in styx, the fiery river of hell. And all the while it gives the weaker class of people(the impotents) thrills of power of these poor people.

Boredom symbolizes the unthinking minds of people, which allows the crimes of the nation to go unnoticed, like all the wars in Fahrenheit 451. "Boredom strangles the life from the printed page" could be an allusion to the book.

Myopic also means narrow minded, and the myopic mirror reflects the narrow minded thoughts right back at the people. When he sees face to face with the moon, it is a possible allusion to the old fable of the moons reflection in the water, and the fox thinks not of this possibility, but that it is an actual object, cheese. The narrator sees beyond the myopic mirror, beyond the reflection, and sees the moon for what it is, and not what the mirror says it is.

But like montague in F451, the people around him are following the governments words while he tries to persuade them to think for themselves, " Why do I always have to tell you ”forget about the precient signs!”?" opposed to following the government.

He pleads at the end that we stick to things we love, and never fall into this system to the extent.

Instead of more intellectual pursuits, like say, reading, we just go for what's entertaining. Teenagers are more likely to hit a Marilyn Manson concert than learn something about the world:

"Masking vapor trails from Mercury For a killer on Umbria who crippled birch mares Now briars replace their old cotton limbs Who will tell? I mean, would it make a difference? Look, metal flower petal Tears do not even appear in the Myopic Mirror"

I have to wonder if these vapor trails are the same ones in many conspiracy theories, also perpetuated by idiots who wouldn't know a birch from a briar.

The word is "prescient," as in knowing the future.

There's a pretty good chance you'll learn something new about the world at a Marilyn Manson concert. But you probably won't like it.

This is one of my favourite Of Montreal songs.
