To me, it paints a picture of how a guy wants to be with someone... but that someone thinks they have their life figured out and doesn't want to be in a relationship because it would only complicate things. So, the guy is trying to figure out what he's willing to do, if the person is worth it, etc.

Meaning he first said he has been thinking lately, but then corrected himself and said "well, actually i've been thinking about this for a while now, more like a couple of years."
he's right, you know. it's i guess that it's more like the last couple years.
sometimes that they are less well-known makes them more special. more like "hey look at this band that I like" instead of like "hey look at this band that everyone likes and has heard of." you get a closer connection to the band, rather than rhcp, for example.
