It Ended On An Oily Stage Lyrics
Everything you said was true
Everything you did was you
Everything I started with her
Ended on an oily stage where
I wrote elegiac stanzas for you
I hope and pray that they come true
He found God
In a parking lot
And you did not
I, I headed for the coastal re...
Regions of mind
To see what I'd find
But I do understand
Why they're looking at you
As if you ever really cared
All across the Eastern Board (?)
Languages were being lost
You look so elegantly bored now
Totally at ease with it all, yeah
Whilst you were drunk, oh you let it all slip
I hope and pray that it's okay
He found God
In a Wiltshire field
Whilst you did not

I love the bit where he sings - "You look so elegantly bored now Totally at ease with it all, yeah". It illustrates exactly how I feel when I'm with a group of people who are apathetic, and when I'm wondering what the hell I'm doing there. Been feeling like that for a while now.
I think it's all about him and another person who feel totally separate, distinct from the cares and worries of a group/the majority of people out there. Hence "he found God in a wiltshire field, and you did not". Sort of like to him - it doesn't matter but it did matter to someone else...?
It's almost as if he wants to escape from the rest of the world, and so does "she" through their relationship. Hence "heading for the coastal regions of mind" (ie getting out of that place..)
Guess it depends on your interpretation.
What an incredible song by an amazing band. Why aren't these guys a massive hit already??
i wish i knew what some of it means "ended on an oily stage?"
"he found God in the parking lot?"
i get lost in the language
here's how I see it
I think 'It ended on an oily stage' means it ended with him slipping up and making a fool of himself in front of a lot of people
and i think 'He found God In a parking lot And you did not' and 'He found God In a Wiltshire field Whilst you did not' - He is saying he had sex with her in these places and it meant a lot to him, he was in love, he found God so to speak, but to her it meant nothing, it was just a quick fumble. thats why it ends with him making a fool of himself... he declares his love for her and she tells him what it meant to her....nothing
harsh
All across the Eastern Bloc
After interpreting Machineries of Joy in detail I wouldn't be surprised if the whole "He found God, she didn't and I'm still thinking" parts are literal. "Regions of Mind etc." is in regards to personal philosophy, thinking things through, that much is clear. I can't/won't interpret this in detail but it's clear there is some sort of disagreement/disappointment with another person about something, as I said I think it's at least partially about faith.
This song makes a lot of sense if you connect it to Machineries of Joy. Is Machineries of Joy a continuation of this?
