I Was Never Young Lyrics
I was never young, even as a child
Said, I was never young; I've always felt beguiled
Oh, I just never smiled, but you, you have a glow, glow from an innocence I'll never never know
'Cause I was never young, even as a boy
No, I was never young; kindness seemed a ploy to temper or annoy
But you, you have a mind full of a wonderment I'll never find 'cause I was never young
I was never young
Ever since I was a kid, I've been a brooding basket case
Ever since I was a kid, I've been a brooding basket case
Ever since I was a kid, I've been a brooding basket case
Said, I was never young; I've always felt beguiled
Oh, I just never smiled, but you, you have a glow, glow from an innocence I'll never never know
No, I was never young; kindness seemed a ploy to temper or annoy
But you, you have a mind full of a wonderment I'll never find 'cause I was never young
Ever since I was a kid, I've been a brooding basket case
Ever since I was a kid, I've been a brooding basket case

I think it's about how you have to have as much fun as a kid as you can. What I am getting is that from the person in the song's point of view is that they always thought they were mature, and that made them better than everyone else... then this other person, who is not mature, has so much fun with life which intrigues the mature boy. He regrets his maturity.
By the way, it's "I've always felt BEGUILED"
I think this song is ironic because of montreal is one of the most childlike (in a good way!) bands I have ever heard. Maybe they are writing about how they would like to affect someone else.
I think this is about someone who has a zest for life that he never had. It's about being jaded and permanently unhappy.
there are a lot of of montreal songs that are actually sad, though the music may be very upbeat.
i think it's about someone who could never really enjoy childhood in the way that other children could (such as a kid who grew up dealing with divorce, emotional and social problems, etc). some people grow up with perfect lives, never experiencing any strife or heartbreak. to me it seems to be about jealousy for someone who has an innoncence that they'll never know, due to what kind of childhood / life they've endured.
wasn't this song the background music for a commercial, probably for like a car or phone company? i can swear hearing it while watching TV one day. i dunno, maybe i finally went insane.
this song is amazing. when they played it live everyone couldnt help but dance. i think its how he had a rough childhood. sure their music is somewhat childlike and playful. but thats just cos theyre new and different and exactly what we need in todays music scene. and it seems like he's singing to a child. "but you, you have a mind full of wonderment i'll never find 'cause i was never young" almost like a release. he wants this child to experience what childhood is all about. the care-free innocense of doing nothing. and being happy and content.
kevin barnes had a really good childhood... his brother talks about it on his website www.thebeewithwheels.com. check it, its miraculous. it inspired me to start drawing.
