I think it's a combination of those 2 theories above; having an argument with his wife in a car or something. Pure Genius, the Dev :D:D:D

It's quite obvious what this song is about. Devin is racing motorcycles with the object of his lust pursuing her, either yelling over the rush of wind and engines or simply thinking these things of her. At any rate he is conflicted with thoughts of frustration toward this difficult woman (and what chick isn't, especially that rides?) and thoughts of sexual desire. When he yells "Put it in gear motherfucker" he seems to be moving in for "the kill" and of course when they "connect and emerge" he must have caught up and, well you sick freaks can figure out the rest.

This is one of those rare "action movie love songs" that combines violence and romance in a way only possible in metal.

are you all fucking insane or just stupid? it's serious although most strapping songs have a hint of humour. it's a reflection of his partner and some of the shit she says to him.

she obviously has said stuff like "i'ts not my fault, i was raised this way", to which dev says "yes, you are a product of that environment. but change is always there if you want it" and the stuff about relationships is all obvious quotes of her (stereotypical as they are). there is a trend on this album to outline negatives in female life partners, in songs like 'love?' and 'possession'

these quotes are then punctuated with a 'put it in gear mutharfuckargh' to asselerate the words in hostility even further. tonight we ride is more about 'tonight we ride onward to hell', nothing about cars. idiots.

But yeah, I love this song. Just an argument between a couple, going over the typical things said ('I'm not yelling', etc) along with correcting stupid statements people often make (as kid-44 said about the 'product of that environment' bit). I think the cliche-ness (lol I fail at english) of it is sort of intended, since arguments between couples often escalate to the same bullshit once you can't even remember why you're arguing. The song's similar to Shitstorm IMO, in the sense that it's nice and simple, expressing things that commonly come up when couples fight.

I can't believe that this has to be pointed out in every song from Alien: Dev was off his meds at the time so that certainly affected the songs. Just because it seems like it could be a fight between two partners, it could very well be a fight with himself. I'm not denying the "obvious" meaning here of a fight between two people, but one shouldn't be so quick to call people retarded just because they see the song in a different light.

With that being said, the energy this song packs is incredibly intense and it makes for one hell of an experience to listen to.

The song starts off with an argument and close to the end it's like "PUT IT IN gear motherfucker" and "for tonight WE RIDE". Then they "deny the ride" because they will still be angry at each other afterwards. Thus the endig line: "you and I, connect and emerge"...
