I think it's about getting a hotel room with a hooker and feeling jaded about humanity after the experience, so he looks toward the "purity" of religion.

"its nine eighteen yeah its coffee colored evening the headlights spin shadows on the ceiling and i'm left here with the gideon bible long strands of her hair trickle down the bed"

It's late in the evening given by the time and headlights. The Gideon Bible, a commonly maroon bible, is the key to this song, and shows that this takes place in a hotel/motel room. The long strands of her hair on the bed can lead to two interpretations. The first is that she is a prostitute, some of hair was left on the bed, and the headlights mentioned earlier is she driving away as he is left in the room. The second is that she is some woman he has been having an off-and-on again relationship with, having infrequent sex in hotel/motel rooms (her identity could be swapped with the prostitute, though), but what matters is that he killed her out of a righteous superiority, finding her actions unpure. The strands of hair belong to her motionless corpse.

First explanation--he feels very emotionless inside and unsatisfied with life, and it isn't getting any better. The second includes the first, but that it is also very cold outside. The hot coffee mentioned later supports this, and that he is now going outside.

The first verse is obvious-- he's reading the bible. For the assassin with the glock, he may either feel that the archtype he described is something to avoid in light of his readings, or that with the more criminal interpretation, he is the criminal. He is nervous from the coffee, signaling he's afraid of what he's done in the past (or the murder he just commited). Jack the ripper continues this theme (If i was guilty of anything, possibly of just killing someone I had sex with, would I still be accepted by God or society?).

The first two lines can be first interpreted that although he was once cold inside, he has found love with the bible's word, having fun in the snowy landscape inside his mind. Or, of course, she refers to the woman's corpse, smooth like the bible, and that he is taking her outside to bury her. Third line, more love for the bible. For the astronauts, possibly their "jumpin on the moon" can be analogically applied to his movement through the snow, or his sense of accomplishment in line with their achievement.

More displeasure with life. His hopes in life have left him cold and alone. Further analysis could be his comparison between his failed hopes (horses) with the possibly dead woman (possibly shot through the head), the product of a failed night of intimacy.

Or both interpretations are true. It's up to the listener to decide the analytical depth.
