This song is about divorce. Chad is talking about the things that happened when he left his wife. "pulling the string" refers to the string that ties the married couple together. At the end of the song he is "tied to no one," meaning that he is no longer with her. This song is so well written it can be read like poetry.

This is one of my favorite songs on the cd, it's so well written... like you said, it's written like poetry... i love the little laugh at the end too...

Even though he hates his ex, he will always love her. Holding the headstone is a representation of how he feels like dying, and in fact welcomes it. The loss has inevitably killed him. But as the saying goes, if you aren't living, you're only dieing slowly.
"Pulling the string" could also mean ending his life. It seems more like suicide than divorce.
It seems like he is comparing suicide to his divorce.
I think it's referencing his divorce, as well as the fact that it seems like no one can help him, or seems to care that he's in pain. And the culmination of those things are making him suicidal.
