As The Years Go By Lyrics
A child asks his mother, do you love me
And it really means, will you protect me
His mother answers him, I love you
And it really means, you've been a good boy
And as the years go by
True love will never die
At seventeen a girl says, do you love me
And it really means, will you respect me
The teenage boy answers, I love you
But it really means, can I make love to you
And as the years go by
True love will never die
I will love you forever
I will love you forever
At sixty-five his wife says, do you love me
And it means, I'd like to hear it again
Her husband says to her, I love you
But it really means, I love you till the end
And as the years go by
True love will never die
Now you're asking me if I love you
And it really means will I marry you
And I answer, yes I love you
But it really means that I won't be untrue
And as the years go by
True love will never die
I will love you forever
I will love you forever
And it really means, will you protect me
His mother answers him, I love you
And it really means, you've been a good boy
True love will never die
And it really means, will you respect me
The teenage boy answers, I love you
But it really means, can I make love to you
True love will never die
I will love you forever
And it means, I'd like to hear it again
Her husband says to her, I love you
But it really means, I love you till the end
True love will never die
And it really means will I marry you
And I answer, yes I love you
But it really means that I won't be untrue
True love will never die
I will love you forever

the word 'love' is very often used to represent something other than what the speaker intends. this is no fault of their own heart, mind, or soul, however, but instead the simple inability of the spoken word to fully describe such a powerful and complicated emotion.
Not really intended to do so, probably, the song shows just how weird the english language can be at times.
So many words have multiple meanings, can be taken out of context, or mean practically anything yeu want them to.
In this case, "love", despite being considered a "universal concept"... well, let's face it, how do yeu DEFINE love?
This one goes through a large number of examples of how it can mean so many different things in different ways. This can cause miscommunication, confusion, or have one person saying one thing, and another agreeing to something completely different.
The 'actual' point of the song, is found in the line "Now you're asking me if I love you", and he's trying to explain that it's too broad a statement, and he's trying to narrow it down and explain exactly how he feels, by showing the specific ways it could mean almost anything, but how he specifically wants it to be understood as well.
