Goodbye Caroline Lyrics
Put on your shoes, girl
I'm goin' to the coast
Where every loser
Gives up what hurts the most
And all those haunted
Unlucky guys get told
Who's really wanted
And who just can't stay sold
Goodbye, Caroline
You're my favorite faith healer
Goodbye, everything
Say I gave to the house dealer
Who could only really let you down
Put on your coat, babe
My luck is winding down
I'll get your suitcase
And pull the car around
Goodbye, Caroline
You're my favorite faith healer
Goodbye, everything
Say I gave to the house dealer
Who could only really let you down
Where it's lit day for night
And the clocks wear their faces bowed
Where the hands and cuffs gleam white
As they hang on a nicotine cloud
Goodbye, Caroline
Goodbye, everything
Goodbye, Caroline
You're my favorite faith healer
Goodbye, everything
Say I gave to the house dealer
Who could only really let you down
Who could only really let you down
Who could only
Let you down
Let you down
Let you down
Let you down
I'm goin' to the coast
Where every loser
Gives up what hurts the most
And all those haunted
Unlucky guys get told
Who's really wanted
And who just can't stay sold
You're my favorite faith healer
Goodbye, everything
Say I gave to the house dealer
Who could only really let you down
My luck is winding down
I'll get your suitcase
And pull the car around
You're my favorite faith healer
Goodbye, everything
Say I gave to the house dealer
Who could only really let you down
And the clocks wear their faces bowed
Where the hands and cuffs gleam white
As they hang on a nicotine cloud
Goodbye, everything
You're my favorite faith healer
Goodbye, everything
Say I gave to the house dealer
Who could only really let you down
Who could only really let you down
Who could only
Let you down
Let you down
Let you down
Let you down

This takes place in las vegas, i think. Besides the 'house dealer' lyric, its 'where its lit day for night' the clocks with there faces bowed, and the white cuffs in cigarette smoke
The album this song is taken from is a consistent story about an alcoholic and the gal who loves him anyway. With that background, the song is pretty easy to get - he's giving up and leaving her, abandoning himself to the addiction. I just love the line about Caroline being a faith healer - she loves him and thinks she can heal him just by believing in him.
At one of her concerts, she did a new song she wrote for the forgotten arm story line, and she talked about when john and caroline were in las vegas, and john disappeared for the night to meet with some people without her, and she knew that he was falling off the wagon
