Canadian Dream Lyrics
I went out on the street today
The Canadian Dream was as far away as it's ever been
As it's ever been
S.O.C.I.A.L.I.S.M. is here to stay
S.O.C.I.A.L.I.S.M. is the only way
Frozen land, frozen minds
Frozen hands and frozen time
'Cause everything moves real slow when it's forty below
Everything moves real slow when it's forty below
Yeah, everything moves real slow when it's forty below
When it's forty below
S.O.C.I.A.L.I.S.M. is here to stay
S.O.C.I.A.L.I.S.M. is the only way
The Canadian Dream was as far away as it's ever been
As it's ever been
S.O.C.I.A.L.I.S.M. is the only way
Frozen hands and frozen time
Everything moves real slow when it's forty below
Yeah, everything moves real slow when it's forty below
When it's forty below
S.O.C.I.A.L.I.S.M. is the only way

Well here's the first thing that we need to keep in mind. Sam Roberts is a smart guy, educated in what is arguably the best school in Canada. He knows that Canada is FAR from a socialist country. So this is by no means a negative look at Canadian 'socialism', because Canada is not a socialist country. Its people are certainly very left-leaning, but that isn't really reflected in the way our country is run. Sam Roberts is a very avid supporter of a number of social justice causes. He was part of a documentary about sweatshop labour, and has songs about unions and workers riots. So this song is FAR from a criticism of socialism at all. Sam Roberts, one can confidently say, could well be a democratic socialist, when you look at his background, his music, and the causes he's aligned himself with.
I am not sure what the meaning of this song is. I believe that he is either saying that Socialism is the Canadian dream, or else that Socialist tendencies prevent the Canadian dream from being realized. I would tend to lean toward the latter, but I don't really know. I would like to hear other people's opinions.
It has anti-socialism intent. That being, the Canadian dream is far away due to the freeze in society with socialism?

Despite what this line from the song 'Canadian Dream' (one of the new album’s highlights) implies, Sam isn’t trying to pass himself off as some Commie radical. He’s just the kind of guy who, when he sees a brother down, lends a hand to pick him up. It’s a socialism based on love and respect, not taxation. Because Sam knows he wouldn’t be where he is now without old Northstar buddies Eric Fares (guitar) and James Hall (bass), and recently acquired mates Dave Nugent (guitar) and drummer Corey Zadorozny (drums), all of whom kicked Sam’s ass back into gear in early 2001, when Sam and his new band debuted at a well-received Canadian Music Week showcase.

This comment is strange invisiblehandshake. A commie radical would be socialist. This song seems to imply that the Canadian dream is unattainable due to the Canadians inability to change their socialist ways. My extreme take here would be that Sam would want to privatize the air we breath.

spoken like a true uneducated american who can only see a fraction of the political spectrum, and has no concept of canadian political culture. canada is a liberal democracy that uses democratic socialism to provide certain services to its people.
