Sophomore Slump or Comeback of the Year Lyrics
[Chorus]
Are we growing up or just going down
It's just a matter of time until we're all found out
Take our tears and put them on ice
'Cause I swear I'd burn this city down to show you the light
We're the therapists pumping through your speakers
Delivering just what you need
We're well read and poised
We're the best boys
We're the chemists who've found the formula
To make your heart swell and burst
No matter what they say, don't believe a word
Cause I'll keep singing this lie if you'll keep believing it
I'll keep singing this lie
I'll keep singing this lie
[Chorus]
We're traveled like gypsies
Only with worse luck and far less gold
The kids you used to love
But then we grew old
We're the lifers here til the bitter end
Condemned from the start
Ashamed of the way
The songs and the words own the beating of our hearts
[Chorus]
There's a drug in the thermostat to warm the room up
And another around to help us bend your trust
I've got a sunset in my veins
And I need to take a pill to make this town feel okay
[Repeat: x2]
The best part of "believe" is the "lie,"
I hope you sing along and you steal a line
I need to keep you like this in my mind
So give in or just give up
Are we growing up or just going down
[Chorus]
Are we growing up or just going down
It's just a matter of time until we're all found out
Take our tears and put them on ice
'Cause I swear I'd burn this city down to show you the light
Delivering just what you need
We're well read and poised
We're the best boys

It seems to me this song is Fall Out Boy's way to retort to those involved in the speculation going around whether Fall Out Boy's second album, "From Under the Cork Tree" will be a success or not, which I assume was a lot since their Take This to Your Grave debut was really great. Hence, the title, "Sophomore Slump or Comeback of the Year" with "sophomore" referring to Fall Out Boy's second album.
The first two lines of the song seem to back this up, "Are we growing up or just going down. It's just a matter of time until we're all found out."
The second paragraph also seem to back this up: "We're the therapists pumping through your speakers Delivering just what you need We're well read and poised We're the best boys We're the chemists who've found the formula To make your heart swell and burst No matter what they say, don't believe a word"
But the meaning could be taken several ways depending on which point of view you want the lyrics to be taken. When spoken through the mouth of Fall Out Boy, the second paragraph could be taken as a way for the band to back up their good name.
However, the following line complicates things: "Cause I'll keep singing this lie if you'll keep believing it"
What exactly is "the lie"?
It could be everything from the second paragraph. So now, instead of the second paragraph sounding like the things that Fall Out Boy support, they sound like things that Fall Out Boy is against (that is, if the lyrics are spoken through the mouths of the "liars".
I hope this sparks some good debate since I'm getting tired of going to SONGMEANINGS.NET and not getting any interpretations for the meanings of songs
Hmm I didn't read this until after I wrote my interpretation. I think that this lie they are singing is their new, more commercial sound. The reason they can't tell if it's a slump or a comeback is because in a way it is both. From Under the Cork Tree may be more successful in reaching a wider audience and having more 'hits' but is it true to what the band started out as? They're growing old and no longer the kids their dye-hard fans 'used' to love. They're ashamed of these new songs and words because they're no longer...

They're ashamed of these new songs and words because they're no longer something they do just for the music but there is this new pressure of being commercially successful. Just some thoughts. I'm still confused by some parts of the song. But it wouldn't be a FOB song if I weren't slightly confused lol
i love this song so much, i think it's about how people will say "i love you" but not really mean it, and this song is him saying that sometimes you have to believe, even if what someone's saying isn't true
Actually at show (the Halloween one in Irvine), Pete Wentz said this song is about burning down your old hometown 'cause you want to get out. So it's basically about gettin' big.
I find it interesting that the bridge talks about how drugs are everywhere. Additionally, they talk about therapists pumping into speakers. What if the lie is about how they say drugs can solve your problems?
Compare with Jamie's Institution by Cage the Elephant
i haven't heard this song yet, but it looks to be a lil like "i believe you, but my tommy gun don't" by Brand New
i think fob has a special site with lyrics, album cover, other crapp in it too for fans that pre-order the cd or sumthing. but like 7 songs have been leaked.
These lyrics have been on here since before the secret site was up, though.
This song has to be my favorite off of the new album, and probably my favorite FOB song overall. There's just something about this song... I feel like I could listen to it over and over, all day long...
