Does anyone know if there's sheet music out there for this song? I'd love to have a link to it, if anyone's got one. This song...it's gorgeous, just trying to make a possibly good thing work out.

"cap in hand" is an idiom meaning submissively. Imagine what is going on in the lyrics, you've probably experienced it at some point in your life where one partner gets violent/angry while the other one sees this and does anything to win their favor to calm them down.

dtsneak has it right about cap in hand. Shes throwing things and hes begging her to stop - both of them are playing parts that arent healthy for the relationship.

Beautiful song, about an attempt at a lovers reunion, for me I believe the key to this song can be found in the lines: "I try to speak but you don't hear me When you're gone you still feel near me For awhile, for a little while" Throughout the song he's attempting to contact his lover through telegraphs, telephones, carrier pigeons ("birds that fly through the air so you hear me sigh") but failing to being able to. The "cap in hand" line strongly hints that it's the 2nd person who broke off the relationship. The narrator appears as dtsneak mentioned to be the submissive character in this scenario. The song ends with "nothing is working tonight" and then some pleading, but more importantly doesn't inform the listener as to what happens, leaving them in the same position as the narrator, in want of more. Beautiful song.

the first time I listened to this was in my car, I didn't pay much attention. But when I got home I had this urge to listen to it again because the piano kept playing inside my head. I was taken by the flow of the piano and Torquil's words. To me the song is about that big fight in your relationship and you're playing the part of the good guy (or guilty guy) trying to mend things, trying to make it work again.

I heard this today for the first time. It's been on my iPod for ages, and I just went past it, thought I'd give it a listen, and fell in love. It's so gorgeous, so beautiful. The lyrics are sad and a bit haunting, and the music is just so soft and inviting, it's hard to resist. Excellent song.
