This song is about Desent. It's obvious that Le Bon must have had a girlfriend at one point or another when he was Betrade & Hurt, otherwise he would have Never written this fine song. :D

To me, this song is clearly about a careless one night stand, which leads to regret and confusion the next day. The first verse is the immediate aftermath of the encounter, where he realizes just exactly what's been done "it always takes so damn long before I feel how much my eyes have darkened."
The second verse first provides imagery of the aftermath, potentially drinks or clothes scattered from the night. This verse gives the indication of a one night stand "it's not as though you really mattered" - this isn't something you would say about a long term relationship. But the intimacy they shared that night is causing unwanted feelings and sympathy for the previously unknown and unimportant subject.
The last verse is talking about how he's trying to move on and is feeling anxiety over what do next with this girl. So many options and no idea how to proceed.
The chorus is terrific, and could have 2 meanings. First, the whole night could be considered a careless memory, a foolish one night stand. In addition, the next day as he tries to move on, a random, or "careless" memory pops into his head of the previous night, so quickly disturbing his mental state ("so easy to disturb, with a thought, with a whisper")
