Among His Tribe Lyrics
He would step out of the night and light a fire among his tribe
Carving from a bear's tooth, he used the flesh to feed the youth
He'd salt it down...
Sails were made from darkened hide, fish were caught in the lowest tide
Thought of war kept him strong, he listened for the battle song
In the night...
All the old would teach the young to heed the word of the master's tongue
A chosen son would take a bride and light the fire among his tribe
And on and on...
Carving from a bear's tooth, he used the flesh to feed the youth
He'd salt it down...
Thought of war kept him strong, he listened for the battle song
In the night...
A chosen son would take a bride and light the fire among his tribe
And on and on...

This song is about the oral tradition passed down through generations, over hundreds of thousands of years. Each generation, some improved the knowledge, some lost the knowledge, but collectively as a species we increased to the point where knowledge is spread at a rate approaching real time.
Among his tribe speaks of the knowledge of how to survive, how to build tools, sails, catch the fish. He then teaches his son this information, and that son will increase his knowledge, and teach his son, and on and on...
Now we find ourselves here, still among our tribe, but we with the internet have the ability to share knowledge with everyone who wants to seek it. Lets hope we keep going on and on.
I think the deeper meaning of this song is to celebrate how meaningful that life is compared to modern life... because everything a person among his tribe does has purpose. Living off the land. Hunting for your own food. Teaching your own young. Defending your people. Basically taking what the land gives you. All for survival.
As opposed to most of our lives, where survival isn't an issue. We spend most of our energy finding ways to pass the time. The postmodern existential crisis. The song highlights how meaningful and real tribal life is compared to ours.
It's a theme in other art and literature. Huxley's "Brave New World" touches on the same ideas.
How could I be the first to comment on this? I love this song, in fact I love the entire Quebec album. Not so sure what it means, though I'm sure it must mean something...
yeah I know what you mean man. Quebec has been out for HOW LONG??? Seriously though I must agree with you; I enjoy every song on the Quebec album except for everything after "Captain" cause those songs were lost. :'( My favorite song by them is Tried and True!! omg such a good beat.
Haha! You enjoy all 15 songs... except for 6 of them
