The Promise Lyrics
Those tears on a gaping void
Who's stretching arms match the hunger of mine
These lips will they never join?
But always draw me closer and further entwined
With a promise dealer
Understand all freedoms fade away
To a point of view
Where many different pathways meet
And we're standing on this precipice with nothing
Much to save
But the deep blue screams of falling dreams
With our next move.
Heaven hide your eyes
Heaven's eyes will never dry.
The shades of a thousand steel
Come flashing by my face in the fury of war
In desolation and abandoned fields
The hungry make their stand when they'll stand for
No more
Hear the passion in their voices
See the heaven in their eyes
Their hopes and schemes are waiting dreams
For less than paradise
And sometimes we make promises
We never mean to keep
For blackmail is the only deal a promise dealer sees
Heaven hide your eyes
Heaven's eyes will never dry
Who's stretching arms match the hunger of mine
These lips will they never join?
But always draw me closer and further entwined
Understand all freedoms fade away
To a point of view
Where many different pathways meet
And we're standing on this precipice with nothing
Much to save
But the deep blue screams of falling dreams
With our next move.
Heaven's eyes will never dry.
Come flashing by my face in the fury of war
In desolation and abandoned fields
The hungry make their stand when they'll stand for
No more
See the heaven in their eyes
Their hopes and schemes are waiting dreams
For less than paradise
And sometimes we make promises
We never mean to keep
For blackmail is the only deal a promise dealer sees
Heaven's eyes will never dry

The Promise
April 25th, 2007
Hi Katy! I have a question for Simon. I am in the United States Navy and currently deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In preparation for this I packed all of my uniforms, boots, hygiene gear, technical manuals, and my collection of Duran Duran, Arcadia, and The Power Station CD's and DVD's that I could fit in to a sea bag. I've become very attached to "The Promise" from the Arcadia album, "So Red the Rose". My wife has just delivered our sixth baby girl while I've been out here and the song has just touched me deeply in a way it never had before. I know songs can mean many different things to many different people and change meaning over the course of our lifetime. I would greatly appreciate if you could share some thoughts, insight, and memories of the creation, performance, and recording of the song. From one Shipmate to another, thank you for your inspiration and time in reading this. Good luck with the new album! V/r, ABF1(AW) Chiaravallotti, Robert S., USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74), Air Department/V-4 Division, Leading Petty Officer

Dear Robert, I am touched by your email. The Promise is about all that's worst and all that's best about humanity. I'm not surprised that you identify with it; from what you say you are experiencing first hand those extremes; i.e. the shameful waste that is war and the wonder of birth. My best wishes with you, stay safe, live long a life of love & happiness. whooosh, S
Thanks for posting the above..I also found this from Ask Katy from Le Bon:
"It's about the western world's betrayal of the third world."
