Don't Cry Out Loud Lyrics
Baby cried the day the circus came to town
'cause she didn't want parades just passin' by her
So she painted on a smile and took up with some clown
While she danced without a net upon the wire
I know a lot about 'er 'cause, you see
Baby is an awful lot like me
Don't cry out loud
Just keep it inside, learn how to hide your feelings
Fly high and proud
And if you should fall, remember you almost had it all
Baby saw that when they pulled that big top down
They left behind her dreams among the litter
The different kind of love she thought she'd found
There was nothin' left but sawdust and some glitter
But baby can't be broken 'cause you see
She had the finest teacher-that was me-I told 'er
Don't cry out loud
Just keep it inside and learn how to hide your feelings
Fly high and proud
And if you should fall, remember you almost had it all
Don't cry out loud
Just keep it inside and learn how to hide your feelings
Fly high and proud
And if you should fall, remember you almost made it
Don't cry out loud
Just keep it inside and learn how to hide your feelings
Fly high and proud
And if you should fall, remember you almost had it all
'cause she didn't want parades just passin' by her
So she painted on a smile and took up with some clown

I was surprised they didnt have this song under Melissa Manchester like it should be, but i guess the Diana DeGarmo one is the same..I like the original better...but anyways, im also really surprised no ones said anything! its such a good song!! theres also some amazing Jazz covers of this ive heard...
I think this song is about someone really close to her, maybe a friend, sister, or even daughter, who had to learn how to be strong during a broken heart.
I think the circus coming to town is an analogy for this new boy coming into her life, and she decided to take a chance with him so she wouldnt miss out (she didnt want parades just passing by her). i think the "painting on a smile" is saying she started putting on a front and not being herself, like people do when they want to impress. i think the dancing on the net without a wire is an analogy to her just diving headfirst into love and letting herself fall for someone who was only "passing by her", not thinking what the consequences would be if something went wrong.
"pulling the big top down", is analogous to the boy ditching her for a new girl, and a circus "ditches" one town and just moves onto the next, leaving behind nothing but "sawdust and some glitter".
I think the refrain is about learning to be strong, and not let stupid boys who just dump you and move on make her cry.
I love this song and its analogies, i feel like every girl can relate to it at some point in their lives.
No one's commented on this? There is a lack of musical diversity these days, anyway, I'm pretty sure the song is about independance, and how hard it can be to be strong.
I too am surprised that noone else has bothered to comment on such a beautiful song. I love the referances to the metophorical circus.
This doesn't jsut apply to girls but to anyone with feelings. I'm a guy who's been hurt as well and this song resonated with me.
I love that first stanza soo much, but what's all this about keeping ur emotions supressed? lol
i think taken out of its context, the idea of it could do some harm
I think the song is more about having a tough skin when things don't work out. When some thing doesn't go right in your life, don't act like it's the end of the world, don't let people think they've got the best of you, get back up and start over.

The Lyrics were written by Carole Bayer Sager reflecting on her Colleague Peter Allen's own frame of mind in life…."He Just Kept Everything Inside...His Personal Philosophy Was 'Don't Show Anyone You're Crying'." Bernadette Peters, who toured with Allen in 1989, stated that Allen told her that "His Mother Taught Him To Always Put Your Best Face On" in response to Allen's father Dying by Suicide when Allen was 14 years old.] The references to "baby" in the Song refer to Allen's Younger Sister Inner Guarded Feeling as well.
Similarly, the Notorious Harvey Phillip Spector Famous American Record Producer, Musician, And Songwriter did the same after his Father Committed Suicide. In April 1949, Spector's Father committed Suicide and on his gravestone were inscribed the words "Ben Spector. Father. Husband. To Know Him Was To Love Him"
Phil having learned to Play Guitar Wrote the Lyrics in his First Record Release, that was "To Know Him Is to Love Him!"
