You To Thank Lyrics
by the time the buzz was wearing off
we were standing out on the sidewalk
with our tattoos that looked like rings
in the hot Nevada sun
gifts piled high
and our moms and dads shook hands
and our party of polaroid friends
rented a pool and hired a band
maybe they knew more than we knew
as they danced and drank
we jumped off the deep end
i've got you to thank for this
christmas came around
and everything was going to crap
for moms and dads
not a clue to be had
we put on a pretty good act
and they seemed to all need to believe it
so we danced and smiled
and paddled hard Beneath it
i've got you to thank for this
you can't say
you've never had
a doubt
you smoked it down
but really wanted out
by the time the buzz was wearing off
we were standing out on the sidewalk
with our tattoos that looked like rings
in the hot Nevada sun
and they won't fade
i've got you to thank
we were standing out on the sidewalk
with our tattoos that looked like rings
in the hot Nevada sun
and our moms and dads shook hands
and our party of polaroid friends
rented a pool and hired a band
maybe they knew more than we knew

and they seemed to all need to believe it
so we danced and smiled
and paddled hard Beneath it
you've never had

but really wanted out
we were standing out on the sidewalk
with our tattoos that looked like rings
in the hot Nevada sun
and they won't fade

when i first heard this song, the piano bit in the chorus overwhelmed me emotionally and i cried. no idea why. o_o
@bearses I know exactly what you mean. It’s in the way he conveys honesty through an easily accessible … Folds has dedicated a significant portion of his career to mastering the art of capturing the “bittersweet”, and the various ways it accompanies us throughout our lives.

I heard in an interview Ben was saying this song was about kids who jump into things to early, getting married to young, when everything doesn't have to be such a big unknown dive. With time, all great things come, but it seems that people don't sit and wait anymore to feel things out. It's all head-first into commitment.
yeah, that's what he says on the dvd side of the album. he says it's about people in the south (where he's from, nashville, i believe) and how their parents pressure them when they're very young to get married. that was the inspiration.
not quite sure what the song means though...
yeah it seems like this girl conned him into gettin married wen they were young and after x amount of years/months...theyre unhappy.
He said live that it's about "a young couple who got married way too early so they could have a party with their friends in Las Vegas."
the songs paints how much pretense is involved in marriages. people get sucked into these social expectations, and their families just make the situations worse. in both the south and the midwest (where i live), it seems like people get married quite early because they feel that's what is expected. and all the trappings of marriage are just sad artifacts of this social rubric....the annoying get-togethers with in-laws, etc. the song makes me so glad i am gay. :)
He alludes to the fact that the girl and the narrator have done something irreversible that now, by southern etiquette, has set their lives indellibly for a longterm commitment-- one can only imagine.
Now, the narrator is resentful of the decisions he made, because they have now affected all plans and dreams he once retained.
I just love this song. I don't know about you guys, but I'm having a lot of friends jumping into the marriage thing, and in my opinion, wrongfully so.
I know (as you all do) the song is just about a guy, realizing way too late, he's done something he can't take back. Hah, and I love the bit about having a drunk night in Vegas, then waking up to "HOLY HELL WE'RE MARRIED!?"
Priceless
