Lonely In Your Nightmare Lyrics
Even on the darkest night when empty promise means empty hand
And soldiers coming home like shadows turning red
When the lights of hope are fading quickly
Then look to me
I'll be your homing angel, I'll be in your head.
Because you're lonely in your nightmare let me in.
And there's heat beneath your winter let me in.
I see the delta traces living lonely out on the limb.
And a passing glimmer warm beneath your skin
Please tread gently on the ground when all around you earth turns to fire
Only get a second chance when danger's on the wind.
Because you're lonely in your nightmare let me in.
Because there's heat beneath your winter
Let me in.
Must be lucky weather when you find the kind of wind that you need
C'mon show me all the light and shade that made your name
I know you've got it in your head
I've seen that look before
You've built your refuge
Turns you captive all the same
Because you're lonely in your nightmare let me in...
And it's barren in your garden let me in.
Because there's heat beneath your winter
Let me in.
Because you're so lonely in your nightmare
Let me in.
And it's cold out on your stone range let me in.
Because there's heat beneath your winter let me in.
Do, do-do, do do do do
Do, do-do, do do do do
And soldiers coming home like shadows turning red
When the lights of hope are fading quickly
Then look to me
I'll be your homing angel, I'll be in your head.
And there's heat beneath your winter let me in.
And a passing glimmer warm beneath your skin
Please tread gently on the ground when all around you earth turns to fire
Only get a second chance when danger's on the wind.
Because there's heat beneath your winter
Let me in.
C'mon show me all the light and shade that made your name
I know you've got it in your head
I've seen that look before
You've built your refuge
Turns you captive all the same
And it's barren in your garden let me in.
Because there's heat beneath your winter
Let me in.
Because you're so lonely in your nightmare
Let me in.
And it's cold out on your stone range let me in.
Because there's heat beneath your winter let me in.

It’s a dark and beautiful song about being with a very guarded person. I thought maybe a postpartum partner. They were so young-how could they have written about something like that. Could’ve been a family member going through it. Either way-it’s beautiful af. Brings tears just listening to it again.
@HolyMerde - love your comment on their lyrics. I created a songmeanings account today for two reasons, in order of priority: 1) to come here and say I completely agree with your post (guarded person), 2) i find lyrics fascinating and as such wanted to participate on this site. All the best, -Scott Atlanta GA

The shock with reality after evasion, so deep and underrated, the 80s lyrics were another level, that's clear
This song is about someone looking at a friend or family member who doesn’t trust anyone. That lack of trust has become a prison (you built your refuge turns you captive all the same) to for this person and the prison is a nightmare of loneliness. The onlooker sees the prison of loneliness and is wanting to join this person in their nightmare to help them escape their prison (I’ll be your homing angel).
I know, because I was lonely in my nightmare for 40 years of my life. Thankfully God was my homing angel.
Great metaphors. Not really. But I do love this song.
Actually, as far as a New Wave/pop song goes, the lyrics really are brilliant. As an old fan of Duran Duran (not their current crap), I was always drawn to their lyrics, and musical compositions. They got a lot of flak for being pretty teen idols, but they had more substance than the crap being spewed today.
Being fearful in a relationship and putting up walls, but it invades your sleep at night.
Ya know, this is a rather DARK song. Which is unusual for Duran Duran and particularly for the album "Rio". I suspect that this song has to do with war and the military, like when he talks about soliders coming home and "homing angel"s.
I find DD uses double entendres often, and in many songs the underlying theme is sex (welcome to the 80s)
