New Religion Lyrics

I've been now sauntering
Out and down the path sometime
Come on, it takes me nowhere which I know
Faces everywhere
Pulling grins and signs and things
Telling me not there man, it's no go
(Don't go there boy)
I need a reason
I can't think without one now
Too much learning got to show
Call it treason
Maybe catch her don't know how
Too many things too much to know.

I'll pull my timing in, seagulls gather on the wind
Lady screaming, lady leave me out
Cause sometimes people stare
Sitting down, electric chair
The steaming crowds they gather and they shout.

Don't know why this evil bothers me
(Come on boy carry the fight you can take em if you're fast)
So why are they trying to follow me
(Didn't I say if you're holding on you'll be laughing
at the last)
How many reasons do they need
(I get along fine with them friends of mine but you
have to make a choice)
I might just believe this time
(You're singing out of tune but the beat's in time and it's us who make the noise).

I'm talking for free, I can't stop myself
It's a new religion
Oh, I've got something to see, I can't help myself
It's a new religion.

Ok, my reasoning might be clouded by the sun
But someone sees the departmental lie
You know this peacetime
Jabbing fist and stabbing knife
You only get one look before you die.

Don't know why this evil bothers me
(Come on boy carry the fight you can take em if you're fast)
So why are they trying to follow me
(Didn't I say if you're holding on you'll be laughing
at the last)
How many reasons do they need
(I get along fine with them friends of mine but you
have to make a choice)
I might just be right this time
(You're singing out of tune but the beat's in time and it's us who make the noise).

I'm talking for free, I can't stop myself
It's a new religion
Oh, I've got something to see, I can't help myself
It's a new religion.

Oh, gotta take pay for the saints n' sinners
In regulation hats and scarves n' things
They walk in formation down the lane
They carry their cross, make a church bell ring
(Bring the army down)
Army majors pull a mean cool truth
There lying in the swimming pool
Searching for the undeniable truth
That a man is just a fool.

Yeah, I'm talking for free, I can't stop myself
It's a new religion
Oh, I've something to see, I can't help myself
It's a new religion.

This is supposedly a "dialogue between the ego and the alter ego". I love this song.

I’ve always thought it was about the internal conflict of whether a person should go with the masses or live by their own beliefs. The ‘talking for free’ in the chorus seems to refer to voicing your opinions and beliefs without feeling condemned to silence by a religion. “I get along fine with them friends of mine, but you have to make a choice” makes it seem like the singer’s friends and peers all live by one belief, or religion, but the singer is conflicted between that and what he wants to believe. Furthermore, “Only get one look before you die,” sounds to me like the singer is realizing he’ll die one day, so he may as well believe what he wants to.

My Interpretation

yes. It seems to be talking about an obsession

I think it's about gang rape.

"Bring my timing in"

Tell him his turn.

"Seaguls gather on the wind"

The men raping the woman. Seaguls (vultures, pests) are the men and the "wind" is the woman.

"Lady screaming, lady leave me out."

The lady shouting to stop, her reluctant and nervous attacker telling her it's not his fault.

"And steaming crowds they gather and they shout"

Other men cheering it on. Reminds me of the movie "The Accused."

eh i dont think so. ur going way off. durandemon said it best

@HungryLikeTheWolf \r\nI think you\'re onto something. I would go a step further and say it\'s about a gang rape done in ritualistic (satanic?) fashion. Hence the reference to religion. \r\n
