Sex Is Not the Enemy Lyrics

No evolution
Sometimes it depresses me
The same old same
Oh we keep repeating history
The institution curses curiosity
It´s our conviction
Sex is not the enemy

A revolution is the solution

I won´t feel guilty
No matter what they´re telling me
I won´t feel dirty and buy into their misery
I won´t be shamed cause I believe that love is free
It fuels the heart and sex is not my enemy

A revolution is the solution

True love is like gold
There´s not enough to go around
But then there´s god and doesn´t god love everyone?
Give me a choice
Give me a chance to turn the key and find my voice
Sex is not the enemy

A revolution is the solution
Sex is not the enemy

I heard this song was slamming George Bush for being homophobic. Lines like "I believe that love is free" and "doesn't God love everyone?" kinda show this.

Yes!! This is my theme song. I could not agree more..."I believe that love is free, it fuels the heart and sex is not the enemy" Sex isn't bad, it's an instinct, and an expression of love. What's wrong with love?

This song could easily be about how religous instituions are against pre-marital sex. Especially the part when she says "The institution curses curiosity". The instituion meaning the Church. I agree with the other meanings everyone in the comments has come with like gay rights and sex being seen as "taboo".

No matter what your beliefs, this song really gives you something to think about in terms of what is excepted in our society, which makes it very powerful.

My Opinion

this song is class! honestly, it's a perfect critique of the media and the way sex is used as a tactic, but still frowned upon. it's about being comfortable with your sexuality and yourself. a triumph!

I always thought it was about the way sex is kind of viewed as a "dirty taboo" (is taboo the right word?) When actually sex is an instinctive action which every living thing on the planet must do to survive; so, why do we avoid it like the plague?

I would like to believe that shirley wrote this after a pro-choice movie screening that I went to & met her at, of course I can't be sure because I am not shirley. She's a great gal though, I saw her again when I volunteered w/ PP. Awesome song either way!

"This is a party song on the surface, but it’s actually dealing with my amazement at how the Bush administration in America is really reactionary and clamping down on gay rights, and women’s reproductive rights and civil liberties in general. I thought it really weird that when Janet Jackson revealed her tit at the Super Bowl it was on the cover of USA Today for three days in a row and, meanwhile, there was no mention of the Iraq war. It was only focusing on Janet’s beautiful tit, which I thought was bizarre".-Shirley

Being gay I feel a huge connection to this song, it speaks of so much I believe in. We get the message that sex and any expression of sexuality is dirty and shameful. We are brainwashed to see it as taboo when in reality its perfectly natural. Theres nothing wrong with sex or sexuality, people should be allowed to find out who they are and express it. Whether youre gay, straight, transexual, or whatever.

I love this song sooooo much. I'm all about free will, and to me sex is seen as taboo when it shoudln't. I mean, I'm not saying I will go and sleep with 10 men in a week, especially since I'm 15. But in no way is sex immoral or evil or whatever negative view there is on it. It's a beautiful expression of love (which has many physical and mental benefits).
