You have to keep Go4's sence of sarcasm in mind when listening to this song. The line "To hell with poverty", which reflects the frustration of the working classes, is followed by "we'll get drunk on cheap wine" which reflects how they contribute to the same system that they are so frustrated with. The paycheck returns to the corporations just a couple of days after it arrives, and the worker still believes he is rebeling against the system.
"To hell with poverty / We'll get drunk on cheap wine" are my favourite Gang of Four lyrics. They're good outside the context of the song, but with that bass backbone they undid my head a few times. Granted, I was drinking cheap wine when I first heard the song... and couldn't afford a cab ride home, so I was waiting for the early bus. To hell with poverty.
I really love to listen to this song just before going to work. In a few words, they tell how it is trying to get pieces of happiness while being seemingly condemned to stupid jobs and small lodgings and hard discounters... That said with perfect irony : "To hell with poverty / We'll get drunk on cheap wine" I saw another version of the lyrics, I'll get it and submit it.
