Baby, You're My Light Lyrics
First time the longing in you wears the girl that grows it
And if he relieves you know that then you've blown it
And as life goes on you know you get to taste
All you find
'Cos baby, you're my light
Baby you're my light
Next time the feeling is the same, don't have to show it
A window of belief is where you own it
And as life goes on you know you have to face
All you find
'Cos baby, you're my light
Baby, you're my light
Baby, you're my light
Baby, you're my light
Last time the years have gone the moment's on you know it
But I believe in you and now I'll show it
And as life goes on you know you don't have to hate
All you find
Baby, you're my light
Baby, you're my light
Baby, you're my light
Baby, you're my light
Baby, you're my light
And if he relieves you know that then you've blown it
And as life goes on you know you get to taste
All you find
'Cos baby, you're my light
Baby you're my light
A window of belief is where you own it
And as life goes on you know you have to face
All you find
'Cos baby, you're my light
Baby, you're my light
Baby, you're my light
But I believe in you and now I'll show it
And as life goes on you know you don't have to hate
All you find
Baby, you're my light
Baby, you're my light
Baby, you're my light
Baby, you're my light
Baby, you're my light

it is an utterly sumptuous song, and Mr Hawley is a national gem. A drunken Pitsmoor genius. Which, in my opinion, is the ideal kind of genius.
On first listening, it does appear to be a love song, which I guess it is. But not in a relationship sense. The song was a sonnet to his new born baby daughter - according to Richard himself in an interview with Mark Radcliffe back in the day when he was still on Radio 1 with Lard - and is, I assume, farther advice to her on how life may turn out, and no matter how good or bad it may be: you'll be alright kiddo.
we have the same last name :)
First verse is the youthful version of the individual singing, who loves without taking action and ends up without what he wants. It is his first 'taste' of love, and has an optimistic view of what can be. Second verse is the experienced version of the individual singing, who can believe in himself enough to know what his heart truely wants. It is the realization that events in life happen that are not in our control, and to be content or happy your must accept these events and by facing up to the 'cards you were dealt' you will gain some peace. Third verse is the seasoned version of the individual singing, who does not have the same amount of time to waste being uncertain, jealous or scared of love. "The moment's on", and he will do what is in his heart to show how he believes in his love for the other person. He knows that hate does not allow growth, and is at peace with letting things go and appreciating the good that is around him. His baby is a guiding light for him in the direction to understanding and peace within himself by his (eventual) love for her.
Great interpretation. Helped me to understand the song better, thanks! I first heard this song on "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" and have had it on repeat ever since. I think it's about moving through life from being young and uncertain to having awareness of the love you've had for this person all along, and expressing this feeling in the end.

Why no comments.A brilliant song.
its a sweet song. i think its about relationships ending and new ones beginning. "And as life goes on you know you don't have to hate All you find " .. having no more sore feelings about the past.. not hating or regretting.. very sad :-/
