The Window Is the Door Lyrics

You just want the phone to ring
The dogs to bark and the wind to sing
Your name in the car
We’re all staring at the flies
They’re all dying to get inside
It’s so strange how hard luck keeps
It gets so easy to leave that works
And airplanes we see as just exits from now
Worlds collide and we depart all my clothes strewn about
Well who really owns the floor
All the cities left undone and bricks in time turn back to mud
The weekend plans are gone
There’s no one coming down the hall
The Kingdoms to come will surely fall
We curtain call and tie one on
I’m not your way out
I’m not your way out
I’m not your way out

The repeated lines, "I'm not your way out" suggest the speaker is advising someone close to him that he can't make everything in her life better. She wants, "the phone to ring/The dogs to bark and the wind to sing". I think it means that in the song, the speaker iscusses what would happen if everyone could just escape from all their problems: "It gets so easy to leave that work and aeroplanes we see as just exits from now". If everyone leaves, "Worlds collide and we depart". So now the cities are empty and devoid of people, "All the cities left undone and bricks in time turn back to mud/The weekend plans are gone/There’s no one coming down the hall".

So he's saying we all have to stick with our lives even when times are tough, you can't just run away.

I agree with that one...A beautiful way to tell a girl you're leaving that she needs to grow up. Can't live on vacation all the time. That's not the real world.

I always try and find songs that add meaning to events occurring in my life. The way i see it:

We all want to be noticed and be that someone special. Sometimes when you get what you want, it isn't as great as you imagined. People have problems or issues that you were not aware of the severity of. You try to be their rock and help them through, but the more you get hurt in the process the easier it is to find an exit from the relationship; either by burying yourself in work or simply jet setting. Once enough resentment and animosity is built up from being repeatedly hurt, and you finally do cut the cord, it can be ugly. Cities undone and bricks back to mud ugly.

And then, there you are. Alone again. And it hurts at first, but its a million times better than putting up with another day of bullshit.
