When a Blind Man Cries Lyrics
If you're leaving close the door.
I'm not expecting people anymore.
Hear me grieving, I'm lying on the floor.
Whether I'm drunk or dead I really ain't too sure.
I'm a blind man, I'm a blind man and my world is pale.
When a blind man cries, Lord, you know there ain't no sadder tale.
Had a friend once in a room,
had a good time but it ended much too soon.
In a cold month in that room
we found a reason for the things we had to do.
I'm a blind man, I'm a blind man, now my room is cold.
When a blind man cries, Lord, you know he feels it from his soul.
I'm not expecting people anymore.
Hear me grieving, I'm lying on the floor.
Whether I'm drunk or dead I really ain't too sure.
I'm a blind man, I'm a blind man and my world is pale.
When a blind man cries, Lord, you know there ain't no sadder tale.
had a good time but it ended much too soon.
In a cold month in that room
we found a reason for the things we had to do.
When a blind man cries, Lord, you know he feels it from his soul.

A blind man is a man whose inner eye failed to see, whose deep conscious did not protect him primaly from himself. His world is indeed pale. He has only the right to cry in the moment, and the pain is chewing his bare soul. The song with its few words paints the sorrow so perfectly, it draws me into the depth, as well as it reminds me of my own blindness. Ofcourse, i believe that there is more to this song, but this is the most mattering thing. Excuse for my freestyle english.
@observer Like all great songs, You'll never get the true meaning. We're all blindmen.

My favorite piece of recorded music is a live version of When a Blind Man Cries that begins with Barber's Adagio for Strings (Played by Jon Lord or an actual orchestra?). If you haven't heard that version, you really are missing out on a musical masterpiece.
This song, I thought, was about loneliness. Ian Gillan uses the metaphor of himself being a blind man; not necessarily shut himself off from the rest of the world, but shut off by others for being blind.
Gillan does mention this in Child in time, as die kleine Hexe mentioned. As I said, I believe the blind man to be a symbol of isolation and loneliness at the cruelty of the world.
Really beautiful, sorrowful song.
it's one of the saddest songs i've ever heard. it's so short yet it conveys so much sorrow, especially the last line: "When a blind man cries, Lord, you know he feels it from his soul."
i think he's shut himself off from the rest of the world. but what i can't figure out is why he calls himself a blind man...
the blind man also appears in Child In Time, both times in a figurative way.. i guess, a blind man is the one who lost his faith/love/way in life?
this is purples best song
Even the guittar cries in this song,........ Lovely song
wow this is really emotional.........i guess it just rolls along with what my life has contained............
One of the best rock/blues songs ever recorded...sublime & beautiful. As was already said, Blackmore's guitar seems to be crying the blues itself. I strongly suggest that anyone who's interested should definitely check out the "Anniversary Edition" of "Machine Head", which contains a remastered disc of the original album, and a remastered/remixed version of the album as done by Roger Glover. The version of "When A Blind Man Cries" on that is - believe it or not! - superior to the one most folks are used to! Lord's organ work in the remix has been brought more to the fore 7 it only enhances & betters an already classic song.
I'm just listening to that version now MrEd48, and you're right, it really does sound better.
