Pleasure and Pain Lyrics

Lover lover why do you push
Why do you push, why do you push
Baby baby, did you forget about me

I’ve been standing at the back of your life
Back row centre just above the ice
Please don’t ask me how I’ve been getting off
No please don’t ask me how I’ve been getting off

Break my body, with the back of your hand
Doesn’t make sense from where I stand
Baby, baby why you wanna mess it up
Sooner or later I’ll find my place
Find my body better fix my face
Please don’t ask me
How I’ve been getting off
No please don’t ask me
How I’ve been getting off

It’s a fine line between pleasure and pain
You’ve done it once you can do it again
Whatever you done don’t’ try to explain
It’s a fine, fine line between pleasure and pain

It’s all the same
It’s all the same
It’s all the same

I have to agree this is about abuse at the hands of a lover. I could be completely wrong here but I think that the line "Please don't ask me how I've been getting off" could be directed at people wondering how she could have sex with such a man.

My Interpretation

saw this on margaret and david's raaEEge too?

i think the lover is interrogating the singer about possible other lovers. this jealous lover might be a current lover who has lately been absent emotionally and/or physically.
or he might be a past lover who used to interrogate and then bash her, and this conversation is reminding her of the bad old times.

he tries to justify his past actions, but she doesn't want to hear it.

there is some hint that their relationship was ambivalent in that possibly his jealousy and teh beatings were to an extent understood between...

Kind of a messed up song.

Definitely abuse, but I think the song is about how the victim tries to justify the behavior. As someone said above, I think the 'don't ask me how I've been getting off' line is to the listener, not the lover. I think it is a question someone might ask her, like, 'how are you putting up with this abusive person', to which the answer is 'it's a fine line between pleasure and pain'.

She's told herself this, because it's the only way she can still reason that the abuser cares about her. I think the following line 'you've done it once...' is also something she's told herself. Like, 'it's okay. He's hit me before, I can deal with it if it happens again'. A sort of 'the first time is the hardest' approach.

Also, I think the 'sooner or later I'll find my place' is in response to him saying something like 'you don't know your place' or some shit. Sooner or later, she'll learn how not to anger him, and be able to fix her face.

If you think about it like this, the album title 'Make You Happy' is suddenly really upsetting. Like, what someone is willing to put themselves through for the idea of 'love'.

Could totally be wrong and stuff, but that's always what I've thought, and though I love the song, it also makes me pretty upset. Someone I love is with an abusive partner, and she tells me 'at least he loves me'. It's heartbreaking, and this song always comes to mind.

Is it just me, or is this song about masturbation/sex? I'm pretty sure it is. I didn't notice until I listened to the lyrics clearly. O_o

well i cant seem to understand how you drew to that conclusion as i think its about physical abuse from a "lover"

"brake my body with the back of you hand" - physical abuse (how can this line mean masturbation?)

"doesn't make sense from where i stand" - why are you hitting me?

"you wanna mess it up" - this is braking us apart

"you've done it once you can do it again"/ its all the same one twice no matter what the reason you shouldn't do it

"pleasure and pain" - love some one and they cause you pain...

this song creeps me out a little bit...it sounds dark somehow. i do love the video though...it reminds me of some crazy broadway musical.

it's really hard to know for sure what it's about. but the whole "pleasure and pain" imagery is what really speaks to me upon first listen. i don't get it being about masturbation...maybe abuse. it's about loving someone who causes you pain, i think. such sadness in your lover forgetting about you. beautiful song.

i rekon its about a girl who is hurt and used by someone she really likes, hence this causes her pain n she gets off other ways to please herself

I agree with head like a hole; I think it's about physical abuse in a relationship.
