I really think that this song has a deeper meaning than anything suggested so far. Even though Copeland doesn't classify themselves as a Christian band it is a well-known fact that certain members of the band are committed Christians. To me, I find it very difficult to believe that their faith wouldn't bleed into their lyrics to some degree.

I think that the song is really an account of the relationship between man and God. The verses focus on how man is distracted from God by the things in this world. We are always trying to keep a level head and accumulate money in our billfolds and gold and diamonds when all God wants from us is for us to worship him. That's where the chorus comes in. "Sing with your head up, with your eyes closed..." These lines are God telling us that He desires our worship. "...Not because you love the song but because you love to sing." This takes the idea of worshiping God a step further and makes it not about singing a song but about loving God. He is asking us not to worship Him because we enjoy the act of worship and the emotional high it can give us, but instead because we really and truly love Him.

I take the song much more literally...I simply believe in the love of singing loud and proud.

this is such an amazing song. i agree will billyclonescu that it just means sing with all your might sing proud. this is one of my favs on the new cd.

Ya, I think is just saying to forget about all of the "impress the crowd" thing and sing for yourself.

i think sweetie emo was closer.. because if it was talking abt literally singing, whats it got to do with the 2nd verse:

I'm thinking only of my billfold and how I want to face you with diamonds and gold in my head, in my hand

well even if its wrong, i like that sweeties perspective on it.

i think it's about missing time with someone you love but it's like you still think all that time is still there waiting to be spent with them. it's saying i know i cant always be here but you should love me for me and be happy that you love me. the 2nd verse i think is about dreaming of give someone sooo much and not being able to but hoping they'll love you otherwise and still be happy.

I see him as singing about himself from his girl's perspective. How he became focused on just making money, even if it was for a good reason, like showering those he loves with gifts. And this is like her telling him to sing because his passion is singing, not because of the money.
