Duchess Lyrics

Duch of the terrace, never grew up,
I hope she never will.
Broken down TV, sits in the corner,
Picture's standing still,
Standing still .

Duch of the terrace, knows all her her-it-age,- Says she's Henry's kid.
Knows all the history in her family
Needs a man, God forbid!
God forbid!

And it sounds like an empty house,
Standing still.
And it's quieter than a mouse,
Standing still.

Duch of the terrace, never grew up
I hope she never will.
Says she's an heiress, sits in her terrace,- Says she's got time to kill,
Time to kill.

And the Rodney's are queuing up,
God forbid!
And they all want to win the cup,
God forbid!

Duchess - Duchess
Duchess - Duchess
Duchess - Duchess

And the Rodney's are queuing up,
God forbid!
And the Rodney's are queuing up,
God forbid!
And the Rodney's are queuing up,
God forbid!

In high school and love this song. May very well be about english snobbiness, good thought there, but I always thought it was a comment on the cheapness of modern life. The Duchess is a kind of "extraordinary girl" figure in an ordinary world of broken down tvs. While the world crumbles around her, she stays with her honour, believing herself to be some kind of royal princess. The "rodneys" are the ordinary blokes she has to choose from to marry, the modern men, part of the boring world. Whatever, it's an amazing song.

My Opinion

Hugh Cornwell is on record as saying this was about an ex girlfriend; an aristocrat with direct links to Henry viii. She lived alone in a huge mansion. She had a constant stream of upper class potential suitors, who she rebuffed in favour of low life junkie rock star :-)

@SmokednCured "low life junkie rock star" is a bit harsh!

petethebastard. Haha. Wasn't meant to be taken too seriously mate,. I tried to do a smiley emoji after my comment

I think this is the opposite of what you are saying, I think this is a posh woman thats down on her luck. and all the guys still think she has a few quid stashed away, hence the queing up for the cup. to get the prize

the stranglers put a bit more pop in their punk with this smart single. i learnt a new word to insult the upper-classes from this song; infact this song could be said to be having a pop at the toffs by implying that the chinless "rodneys" aren't good enough for our "duch" and she should aim a bit lower.

the stranglers dressed as choirboys for the video to this song which resulted in it being banned for being blasphemous!?!

Reminds me of uni as well!

Very English song, taking a swipe at middle-class snobbishness/pretentiousness.
