Mercury Lyrics
Want to go get high?
Mercury is parked outside, under the lights
Want to take me to
The parking lot of the old high school?
And it's like you said
I would've turned up dead in the car
Mercury is parked outside, under the lights
Want to take me to
The parking lot of the old high school?
I would've turned up dead in the car

I assumed it was about how people get high or drunk in cars in cold climates during storms. They leave the car running, snow gets very deep while they are passed out and die of carbon monoxide poisoning. https://wonder.cdc.gov/wonder/prevguid/m0039929/m0039929.asp
Such a simple song, but for the life of me, I can't decide what it means. It's so beautiful. It reminds me of when I would go to my old high-school parking lot to do just what the song says.
I take it to mean that Kathleen used to get high in her car, named Mercury, so often during high school that she feels now that if person this song is directed towards hadn't shown her otherwise, she would of just stayed in that car, getting high, till the day she died.
this song is super beautiful, its kind of crazy hearing this because i know i heard it somewhere before a long time ago. maybe its just one of those gems that you stumble upon that overwhelms you somehow. this is the most beautiful song ive heard this year. thank you tj
I don't interpret as she would have kept doing that her whole life i.e. "'til the day she died", but that repetitively getting high and the lifestyle would have killed her. Something like seeing an OD in her future if she would have made that choice
