Mistakes We Knew We Were Making Lyrics
We made plans to be unbreakable
Love was all we knew
No insurance for the unthinkable
Blindly get us through
We've been searching for a lifetime
Short as it may seem
Riding on the fumes that spark us
While igniting dreams
Mistakes we knew we were making
Mistakes we knew we were making
Don't think about chances we're taking
Mistakes we knew...
Driving in the rain to the hostpital
Quiet aches in tense
What at once just seemed the impossible
Now makes perfect
We held hands to face the uncomfortable
Cold and lonely room
Magazines and empty distractions
Barely got us through
Mistakes we knew we were making
Mistakes we knew we were making
Don't think about chances we're taking
Mistakes we knew...
And when we try
To think of the life inside
We found ourselves
Looking at the world through new eyes
What can now be said
Oh, little one on the other side
Dance until the band stops playing
Sing with all your might
Mistakes we knew we were making
Mistakes we knew we were making
Don't think about chances we're taking
Don't think about rules we're breaking
Mistakes we knew...
The list goes on and on...

This song is definitely about an unplanned pregnancy. The couple realizes that they made a mistake by having sex when they see the consequences are this "life inside", the unborn baby. They drive to the hospital together, and the "aches" could be referring to either her being in labor, or else the pain that they have caused in their lives and hearts by this mistake. It refers to the "little one on the other side", and this could mean that the baby died, but I believe that it refers to the baby being inside her (thus on the "other side" from him), or else that he cannot see the baby until they get to the "other side" of her labor (so he is speaking to the the little one from this side). And i think that Mae's lead vocalist/songwriter does have a kid. Back in April 2007 i went to see Mae open for Relient K in concert. Just before the concert began another band come out on the stage, instead of Mae, and started out by apologizing for Mae not being able to play due to the fact that their lead vocalist had got on a plane headed home earlier that day in hopes to make it in time to see his baby being born.
I'm really loving this song...
I kinda wanna say it's about going to get tested for STDs haha... I donnnno. But it's so good!
I figured it was about having a baby... "What at once just seemed the impossible Now makes perfect sense" and then there's all of the lines about going to the hospital but these lines really made me think they were referring to having a baby..
"Looking at the world through new eyes What can now be said Oh, little one on the other side Dance until the band stops playing Sing with all your might"
I'd have to agree with TheDood. This is about a unplanned pregnancy.
read these through it a couple times: "And when we try To think of the life inside We found ourselves Looking at the world through new eyes"
"Oh, little one on the other side Dance until the band stops playing Sing with all your might"
Both things seem to be talking about an unborn baby in the womb. The general concept seems to be about a couple that's having sex without thinking about the consequences, but they accept those consequences after they occur (getting pregnant), instead of running from them, althought there seems to be some regret. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what it seems to be saying to me.
They break up for a short time after it. However, they realize that their love will never leave them, so they accept the child and get back together. This is what "Cover Me" is about.

i'm not exactly sure what this song means. i was kinda thinking it was about a baby too when i looked at the lyrics. either way it's a beautiful song! i LOVE it!
Also, just a heads up. Mae did not take this title from Straylight Run. It's from a Dave Eggers book. :)
What is Dave Eggers book about? Is it about an unplanned pregnancy? When I started to listen to it, I knew it was about a baby, but you dont know until the end what their choice is and of course it is the right one. I think this song could be a response to Ben Fold's "Brick" where the other choice is made.
beautiful.
I deffinatly it is about unexpected Pregnancy..almost every line could go along with it. And the name of the song...come on..
I love it
