You look at me with your glazed eyes
Your plastic ideals are your demise
You are just hurting yourself
His heart bleeds for you
And you need to run
You need to run, oh oh oh oh oh
Pretender
Everything is normal, everything is fine
I don't mean to hurt you,
But I think you are blind
Everything is normal, everything is fine
I don't mean to hurt you,
But I think you are blind
Everything is normal, everything is fine
I don't mean to hurt you,
But I think you are blind
Your plastic ideals are your demise
You are just hurting yourself
His heart bleeds for you
And you need to run
You need to run, oh oh oh oh oh
Pretender
I don't mean to hurt you,
But I think you are blind
Everything is normal, everything is fine
I don't mean to hurt you,
But I think you are blind
Everything is normal, everything is fine
I don't mean to hurt you,
But I think you are blind

I might be reading too much into this but I think this song might be about someone who's family is quite rich & materialistic as a result. she's in a relationship with someone who isn't but she can't love him because she doesnt know how to because she never received it from her family, she can't open up to anyone about her problems so she needs to run away from it all but she can't so she'll pretend that evrything's ok.
...uhm it's about some pretender...yuh.. lol
Damn, I love this song. Guess it's someone talking to her sister/friend about how she closes herself off from happiness. Missing stuff:
I'm really tired of all your lip The same old things--oh, it's gibberish You are so passive--you're hiding You are just standing on the edge
I wish that they could see you I want the world to meet you
Also, I think it's "his heart beats for you" and "I think you are lying."
On the eisley.com boards someone posted a 5-year-old article in a Christian magazine. The author described "Pretender" as being about religion, which I first thought was stupid but then realized makes sense.
The subject of the song is hiding from a real connection to Jesus/God, remaining passive--not Christian, or just going through the motions of being Christian. "His heart beats for you and you need to run--"she's intimidated by the hugeness of Jesus's love. The speaker is trying to convert her, saying that though she claims to be happy, she knows she really needs to become Christian. Obviously, the "You" at the end is Jesus/God.
i don't think it's about religion. seeing as they're not a christian band. C:
I agree with PikachiBoogaloo. I remember one of them once saying in an interview that they never tried to instil their beliefs into others, or have them as a theme in their songs. So I doubt "Pretender"s about religion.
