Just wanted to expand on a previous comment about the line: "Your journey back to birth is haunting you"
"Journey back to birth" is a really awesome way of describing how people often look back on their lives... ultimately where we are today is the result of a series of choices that led to a path of outcomes and further choices to make... Sometimes the natural question to ask yourself is "how did I end up here" and I think Dredg was really able to capture those feelings you experience when looking back on your life, the endless questions and "What if's" really can be "haunting", and even more so when you begin to consider how the rest of your life will pan out if you keep moving through life and making similar choices at the same rate: hence "Your departure from the earth is haunting you".
Bug Eyes really is all about the epiphany... the "freaking out" you experience when you suddenly realize you're not where you want to be in life, when you're caught in the crossroads between a difficult (perhaps regretful) Past- and an uncertain and quickly-approaching Future. At the same time, reflecting on the very existentialism that may have discouraged one from "settling down" or "falling in line" with society... Is there a way to really live without being "trimmed down like hedges and told just to sit and wilt"? There seems to be a compromise here between getting your life together and still being able to feel "alive".

i agree with all of you. dredg is the most artistic band that i know of. i have been a fan for about five years and every new work they put out takes the listener on a journey. every album is a singular piece of work with plenty regard to theme and variance. bug eyes... this song is certainly a lament, but i do not think it is about a death of someone else. this song seems more introspective than that. in the promo live dvd for the latest album gavin and dino talk some about how this song is about conflict and the yin and yang of things. this is evident in the verses of the song. i think this is gavin assessing his life as an artist. he is looking back on his past (journey back to birth) and to his future (departure from earth). he is thinking about his time with the band and the struggles they have had. he fights with the feeling that his time has been wasted.
dredg's time has certainly not been wasted. i hope more and more people can be inspired by what they create.
oh man, what a good song. I've been waiting forever for Dredg to put out something new. I love the piano that kinda' lingers just behind everything in the song... so amazing, everything you'd expect from Dredg. The lyrics are pretty straightforward; the person speaking feels lost and alone (kinda almost feels like "The Canyon Behind Her: WHAT HAPPENED NEXT!!"), and is haunted by thoughts of a wasted life and wanting to begin again.
Man I love Dredg. One of the best bands ever, in my opinion.

This song: WOW! I feel the same about this song as you three. Also, dredg is simply an amazing band. I hope a lot more people take notice of them this time, especially since this album sounds like it will be the most balanced of the three! dredg more than deserves recognition; it's owed to them by the many who didn't/don't care about music as an art!
