I think this song is about a guy, lamenting the end of a relationship, brought on by his girlfriend breaking up with him in order to pursue other interests in life.

I love when he says "so you've decided on an art school"...for me it's about the melancholy we feel when we think of past loves, or people gone, or things we regret...how our life could have been different..

(I think) The beginning of the song is his anger and resentment and hurt in his everyday waking life. Drunken one night stands to cover up the pain. Then "So you decided on art school.." with the key change is him lost in his own thoughts, sadness and regret and longing as he lays in bed not being able to sleep...thinking about this girl.
