There’s a shark deep down under
I try to call her name
But the dark waters between us
Makes me call in vain
I’m surfing on the surface with my fingers in the water
But she seems to have lost her interest in me
I miss you all the time
Though you sit next to me
I hope you feel just fine
Wherever you may be, whatever’s in your way
Whatever’s in your way
Of all the few indulgent sailors
I am the patient one
You’re the muse so involved with
The fingers in your hair
I miss you all the time
Though you sit next to me
I hope you feel just fine
Wherever you may be, whatever’s in your way
Yeah
I pray for you
For your return
In me you will forever burn
I miss you all the time
Though you sit next to me
I hope you feel just fine
Wherever you may be, whatever’s in your way
Cause I can’t seem to reach you
I try to call her name
But the dark waters between us
Makes me call in vain
I’m surfing on the surface with my fingers in the water
But she seems to have lost her interest in me
Though you sit next to me
I hope you feel just fine
Wherever you may be, whatever’s in your way

The fingers in your hair
Though you sit next to me
I hope you feel just fine
Wherever you may be, whatever’s in your way

For your return
In me you will forever burn
Though you sit next to me
I hope you feel just fine
Wherever you may be, whatever’s in your way
Cause I can’t seem to reach you

this song is obviously about a guy who is crazy about a girl, they have broken up, she has moved on, but he is still waiting on her..... sad song but i love it
i actually took it to be more that he's missing a girl he always wished for but never had, and is forever lonely because he failed to pursue her... or perhaps never met her at all
I think Plark is right. This song is about a guy missing a girl he never had the chance to be with. I don't know about the part about never meeting her, I don't think that is right. I think he was in love with this girl, but she didn't feel the same way - and even though he tries to quit thinking about her - he can't quite help it.
"I’m surfing on the surface with my fingers in the water" I think this indicates how he says that he is over her and has moved on, but he still has his "fingers in the water", as if he is still interested in her - and he can't quite give up although it seems hopeless.
The lyric is actually: "But she seems to have lost her interest in meat."
It's a lot easier to hear in the acoustic version off the Home Dead EP - which has a much more fittingly somber tone.
But that doesn't change the meaning a whole lot; the "meat" in the shark metaphor is him.
The lyrics seem to indicate that there used to be something between them. She lost her interest in him. He waits for her return.
The worst part is that she's still a part of his life. He doesn't miss her because they've lost touch; he misses her because she's not acting like the same person she was when they were together. She's just locked him out emotionally.
I really thought this song was about someone who had died he was really close to. At first, I thought, maybe his mother because the part "I pray for you for your return" and "In me you will forever burn"

i think it about a guy meeting up and falling in love with a maneater. she's only stringing him along and he eventually realises this but its all the same. he's a doomed sailor like all the rest who have ever sailed her waters
The song is clearly about a guy in love with a girl with mental illness.
