In the Morning of the Magicians Lyrics

In the morning I'd awake
And couldn't remember
What is love and what is hate
The calculations error
Oh-oh-oh
What is love and what is hate
And why does it matter
Is to love just a waste
Why does it matter
Oh-oh-oh?

As the dawn began to break
I had to surrender
The universe will have its way
Too powerful to master
Oh-oh-oh
What is love and what is hate
And why does it matter
Is to love just a waste
Why does it matter
Oh-oh-oh?

I have a more optimistic viewpoint of the song than others here--possibly because the lyrics here are wrong. The correct line is: "Is to love just a waste? How can it matter?"

The "how can" to me signals that yes, although we're merely tiny specks in a huge unpredictable universe, it is never a waste to love one another. In fact, I'd argue that that's the whole point of the song because it works with the previous question: "What is love and what is hate? And why does it matter?" The first question does not imply that love and hate don't matter, but rather that wondering what they mean is pointless and they are defined by the fact that they exist. Similarly, the "How can it matter" does not mean to have "it" refer to "love." The "it" instead refers to questioning whether or not love is a waste, which makes a lot more sense to me.

makes total sense for me!

This album just cuts me to shreds. It destroys me, makes me want to cry, it makes me think about the day i'll die, about the day that anyone i know (like "Do You Realize??" says) will die and it makes me so sad.

i think this song is about the general mindset of someone who no longer understands love and is just ready to accept whatever life throws at them. beautiful song.

Amazing song. I think its about being aware of the forces in life that are greater than you, or at least ones you cant control. Like hes recognizing a love in his life may not work and he realizes sometimes it wasnt just meant to be. The line "I had to surrender/The universe will have its way /Too powerful to master" really sticks with me. He's just sort of accepted, albeit reluctantly, that what he wants just may not be in the cards. Sad.

My Interpretation

i like to think the first lyric is "in the morning of the wake" which gives meaning to why he struggling with the concept of love and hate. He lost someone very dear to him and all the love they shared cant bring them back. He is lost in despair as even his hate for why the universe let this happened proves futile. In the end he submits to his cosmic insignificance which sets up the conflict in the remaining songs where he tries to recover from this hit to his ego, but instead of returning to his previous ways he comes to an understanding with the fragility and ephemeralness of human life shown primarily in Do You Realize??

This song is so gorgeous, it's incredibly beautiful. It's about questioning life and your part in it. It's about how the universe is huge, vast, complex, and we will never understand it. No matter what happens, the seasons go by, death, life, the universe will have it's way with no thought of you.

Yes, I agree that this album is very powerful in its delivery and messages. There's just a cosmic scope to the album that makes you wonder about your place in the universe and the nature of it all.
