This is far from dumb, and far from random. How true it is.. And the way he says it, chills
the last line seems to be about christmas and the juxtaposition of the religious aspect to the commercial aspect. perhaps he expects this discovery of faith, and all he gets is hallmark cards and cheap gifts. i don't think it necessarily has to be about faith, and maybe that's just a symbol for something else, i'm really not sure.

psh what are you talking about? all of anthony's song have meaning, sometimes only meaning to HIM. who says he's high when he writes his songs? your cwazy

Anthony Green has been off drugs since his early Saosin days, possibly before. So, to say he's 'always' high when he writes his songs is a common mistake. Getting off drugs was a big accomplishment for him, so let's give him some credit for that.

I think this song is broken up into paragraphs and that's how it should be read. It seems like there is a space imbetween 'the woman in the lobby...' and 'in California', 'with a dirty, tired smile..' and 'the man next door, 'something really close...on' and 'when this whole thing started...'
If you make it that way, it is easier to understand. Maybe the woman in the lobby is in the lobby of a hospital, which would mean he (or someone else) had done something (overdosed?) on the things that were 5.99.
I think the whole thing with the California news anchors has to do with watching TV in the hospital room (if that is where it takes place).
The man next door could be in the hospital room next door, probably listening to the TV really loud.
The whole next part doesn't make much sense, but maybe has to do with realizing that things are worth living for. 'Jesus and the sharp electric star' makes no sense what so ever, maybe it just sounded cool.
This song made sense to me as soon as I heard it and maybe after reading this it'll make sense to other people. Maybe I'm just crazy.
