The Valley Song (Sing of Your Mercy) Lyrics

You have led me to the sadness
I have carried this pain
On a back bruised, nearly broken
I'm crying out to you

Chorus
I will sing of Your mercy
That leads me through valleys of sorrow
To rivers of joy

When death like a gypsy
Comes to steal what I love
I will still look to the heavens
I will still seek your face

But I fear you aren't listening
Because there are no words
Just the stillness and the hunger
For a faith that assures

Chorus

Alleluia, alleluia
Alleluia, alleluia

While we wait for rescue
With our eyes tightly shut
Face to the ground using our hands
To cover the fatal cut

And though the pain is an ocean
Tossing us around, around, around
You have calmed greater waters
Higher mountains have come down

Chorus

Alleluia, alleluia
Alleluia, alleluia

Yeah

Alleluia, alleluia alleluia, alleluia
Alleluia, alleluia alleluia, alleluia

Chorus (4 Xs)

Oh, Lord sing of Your mercy,
Mercy
Your mercy

This song has helped my church youth group get through the death of a fellow student. He was best friends with my brother and they always played this song for youth group worship. Such a powerful song with so much meaning, and it can really be interpretated for many different circumstances of life...from a death to just a tough time.

It's about the intense pain that comes from losing someone, but how much greater is God's comfort and power to make us whole again.

It's a reminder to me of how devoting your life to God doesn't mean everything is going to be swell and dandy in life... but it calls us to be faithful when brought through valleys of sorrow or to rivers of joy. It's easy to forget this when everything seems to be going perfectly well.

I love this song. It always gets stuck in my head. It's a good chorus to remember.

This is such a great song, but since gypsies are actual people - they're officially called the Romani, the people that invented Flamenco - I wish Jars of Clay would have used a different simile than compare death to gypsies that "steal". That is an ingrained stereotype of these people that are just like you or me.
