Lyla Lyrics

You wanted to buy me
For a hundred euro
You said you'd take me
To your little car
Your friend lived near by
He had a house and all
Where was I from you said
You guessed Yugoslavia
Well it's not Yogoslavia
It's not Yugoslavia at all
It reminded me
Of a movie I just saw
About a little girl
From Yugoslavia
She got sent away
They made her prostitute
She ate McDonald's all day
And never had a chance to play
Lyla
You wanted to buy me
For a hundred euro
You said you'd take me
To your little car
Your friend lived near by
He had a house and all
Where was I from you said
You guessed Yugoslavia
But it's not Yugoslavia
It's hardly Yugoslavia at all
Lyla

I don't think they ever actually turned to prostitution... Sierra was studying opera and Bianca was a model/poet/artist before CocoRosie.

'You guessed Yugoslavia But it's not Yugoslavia It's hardly Yugoslavia at all' I haven't seen the film, but I always understood the line to refer to poverty, prostitution happening in in your own neighborhood, and the fact that people imagine that it happens in other countries, poorer places, but not where they live, as a 'that doesn't happen to us' kind of thing. Also the idea that the guy wasn't saving her at all, he was buying her, she might have a nice house and all, but she was still regarded as property. I don't think they turned to prostitution, just sympathize with people forced to.

I like the movie, but the story is set in Estonia not Yugoslavia. If they made this mistake on purpose, it's funny. Otherwise, it's ridiculous.

hey dude read what they say

"you guessed yugoslavia... well its not yugoslavia..."

I think this sad song refers to a time when the band had to turn to prostitution to support themselves. The song conveys the feelings of shame and listless horror that is probably felt during such a dehumanizing act.

I'm pretty sure they never did. Maybe they just feel for the women who have to?
