It's about 'sleeping sickness' (Can't remember the proper name), and how when a teenage girl gets it and wakes up as an old woman, she is shocked that the doctors have kept her alive and wants to be killed.

Apparently there was an epidemic of this 'sleeping sickness' (a form of encephalitis that put victims in a coma: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encephalitis_lethargica ) in the early twentieth century, the girl Albini wrote about was a victim of the epidemic. In the 1960s it was discovered that the drug L-dopa could awaken patients from a coma, and some doctors decided it would be a good idea to wake up these victims who had slept through the prime of their life-- with predictable results.

Then Albini wrote a song about it.

Jesus, reading about Big Black lyrics, they are every bit as dark as the music itself. Damn.

If you ever get the chance to see Shellac, I recommend it! Seen them twice, one of those rare bands that sound even better live than in studio (no slight against Albini's production, they're just that good live!).
