Know-How Lyrics
Riding on this know-how
Never been here before
Peculiarly entrusted
Possibly that's all
Is history recorded?
Does someone have a tape?
Surely, I'm no pioneer
Constellations stay the same
Just a little bit of danger
When intriguingly
Our little secret
Trusts that you trust me
'Cause no one will ever know
That this was happening
So tell me why you listen
When nobody's talking
What is there to know?
All this is what it is
You and me alone
Sheer simplicity
What is there to know?
All this is what it is
You and me alone
Sheer simplicity
What is there to know?
All this is what it is
You and me alone
Sheer simplicity
Never been here before
Peculiarly entrusted
Possibly that's all
Is history recorded?
Does someone have a tape?
Surely, I'm no pioneer
Constellations stay the same
When intriguingly
Our little secret
Trusts that you trust me
'Cause no one will ever know
That this was happening
So tell me why you listen
When nobody's talking
All this is what it is
You and me alone
Sheer simplicity
All this is what it is
You and me alone
Sheer simplicity
All this is what it is
You and me alone
Sheer simplicity

I think regardless of the type of relationship the singer is talking about, it's a relationship that can't last. For him, it's something short term, casual and fun. "Sheer simplicity".
I think the line "Surely I'm no pioneer, constellations stay the same" reference the fact that he has one goal in mind, and is not interested in deviating from it or exploring other options. Constellations are constant, and only require looking up. They also only are visible at night. His goal is simple and not emotionally complex, to enjoy the relationship while it lasts.
The other person feels differently, and seems to want to take it farther, or is more invested in it emotionally. He does not understand this, see "Cause no one will ever know, that this is happening, so tell me why you listen, while nobody is talking".
The melody stays rather upbeat and peppy in his moment, then slowing down to transition to Feist's part. She sounds more emotional, and almost like she's sadly accepting the situation. I also like the piano that comes in, starting with some simple notes, than transitioning into something more complex and present, seemingly building up to something before just petering out.
Love this song, it's my favorite on the album. Feist's voice is so lovely :)
Is it just me or is this song about adultery?
Now that you mentioned it, I thought it could be. Some discreet relationship of sort. Great tune!
Nah, it doesn't seem to me that it's about adultery. I think it's about a man and a woman making love, just for one night - and why not? So the song would be about showing how such a simple thing as two persons making love shouldn't be that big a deal - not, of course, when it involves cheating, but I don't see where in this song that theme takes place.
Just a man and a woman, alone. Sheer simplicity =)
good song. Is that feist jumping in the middle of the song?
haha i thought it was her too.. great song; one of my favorites by koc. currently learning how to play it.
sorry forgot to say.. it does seem like they're doing something wrong. maybe it is adultery??
yes it is feist, as well as some other songs by kings of convenience like this song and the build-up, ill check on the cd cover, im pretty sure she does another one.
i feel like the third line has to be "peculiarly interested", as opposed to entrusted...?
It does make more sense as "peculiarly interested", but my ears can hear it as either word, so I'm not sure. I definitely think it's about some sort of secret relationship, and the song is an entreaty to their partner to not overthink things.
