I hate to be one of those people who equates every remotely imaginative lyric to being about drug use, but don't you think that could be a reference to such things? Either that or it's an allusion to "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds." Or it could be both, I suppose.
2 things: one is that he is sleeping, dreaming a great dream and refuses to wake up. another is that its a memory as a child, wishing he would return to that life, so he daydream about it, and is afraid the memory is gone i love this song. i love the guitars so much

I know what this is about. So, so much. This song is about depression. this is what it feels like. It gets scary and sad when it becomes night again, when its dark-- thats the way it is. once i could laugh, see the good in me, see the black and the white.... but you cant anymore, its all so sad and blurred and scary and confusing and passionaltey meanless. I think "Lucy was high, and so was I" was meant to date the song: Sgt Pepper was released in 1967, when Brian May (who wrote this song) would've been twenty. I think the song is describing what he was personally going through at the time.
I initially interpreted this song as being about one who lost his naivety, a person who grew up and began to see the world from more perspectives than just the one he was raised to have; nothing is black and white anymore, and he no longer knows what is right or wrong, if the way he is living is right anymore, and he is left to be sad, confused, and alone.
Maybe I chose to think of it that way because I can relate to the song in that way, I'm not sure: I agree that is also can deal with depression, and now I end up thinking it has to do with both, especially taking into consideration the chorus.
Ultimately this is probably my favorite Queen song: Queen's first album is just a gem in the first place, and this song is simply beautiful. And as I said I can relate to it a lot and it brings me comfort (if one could say that) that I have found a songwriter that understands what I'm currently going through.
