An Erroneous Escape into Erik Eckles Lyrics
Is cursing like an evil sailor
But remember the knife is worse
For the editors of movie trailers
I'll help it's all the same to me
Just tell me if you want me to
People will think you're really callous
But no matter how hard you try
You'll never be as weird as Uncle Alice
I can't relate to this world, I'm not bored enough
Watch out, the music will complete the change in you
You need to be haunted by glass freckles
And if your color treatment fails
Well, you can always talk to Erik Eckles
this song left me so confused, i just assumed it was a random string of words and that seems to still hold true in my mind. i am a big fan of the line 'watch out the music will complete the change in you' really creative, somewhat druggy
"I'm not upset just confused and it's so tough I can't relate to this world I'm not bored enough"
i think that's about suicide, he can't relate to the world, but he isn't bored enough yet to kill himself, which makes him confused as to what to do.
I think he's saying that the world and pop culture is boring compared to what's going on in his head or his own world, which he unlocks and shares through music.
In this period of 'Of Montreal's' History, I think the indie scene was still growing popularity. And if you listen to his lyrics similar to a rappers, there are several very clear messages. 'Octopus in your purse' --> Your art is bitchin' like an evil sailor. 'Remember the knife is worse, for the editors of movie trailers', maybe the knife tool in cutting DVDs for indie films, or that having a knife in the movie trailer is about as bad as having vituperative fine art work. Being decent, basically. Of montreal usually does his work without murdering, drugs, or foul profanity (until Wicked Wisdom of course). Which goes into the next verse, and then comments on how Uncle Alice, a heavy metal band, is no good for you. 'I'm not upset, just confused, and it's so tough' explains why he'd never listen to Heavy metal. He associates heavy metal with being upset, confused, and that it represents rough masculinity. The next line shows that he's too stimulated with pop music to even get bored enough to just listen to screaming all day. And he tells others, that the music will change you into something horrible. Obviously if you were going to listen to the song in braille, you'd have to touch raised glass (glass freckles, thats what it feels like). If you listened to Heavy Metal and you were blind, you'd be scared to death. If your hair color is going as planned, you can always talk to the scary, cursing, knife carrying, upset, confused, and overall blind Erik Eckles.
thank you for decoding this song. nice work. Of Montreal are great lyricists IMO.
