I'm pretty sure this song is about lust and the cheap feelings you get after persuing it.
It's definitely about lust and the guilt it brings to penitent person: not only sexual lust, but also the desire for anything selfish or harmful.
I think this song is basically about a guy who got involved with a girl, and he loved her. But he lost interest and cheated on her. After she found out, drama erupted between them, and he broke up with her. She was completely devastated, and he was fine with the break-up...but after a while, he started to miss her. And not only that, but the guilt of how he had hurt her was raining down on him and devouring him and he just wants to contact her, and make things right between them, and maybe build up a friendship if not a relationship.
My fucking ex-boyfriend loves this band so much.. he should have listened to this song before he decided to lie to me about his ex-girlfriend he was seeing while we were going out.
Nonetheless a good song.
