The Town Halo Lyrics
Up through the crystal, nineteen and counting,
And miles away, a voice from the mountain.
Back from the program, our own girl Jesus,
So proud to say we love her to pieces. We do.
So tell us the story again, of how you became the town halo.
Up through the crystal, raised on mythology,
She winds her way from truth to apology,
Topless in new wings, free for the taking,
And miles away, a foundation shaking for you
So tell us the story again, of how you became the town halo.
Under construction but based on a true one,
The facts will change so tell us what you want.
Air from a bottle, the press can't breathe it.
We're proud to say we love her to pieces. We do.
So tell us the story again, of how you became the town halo.

This is my favorite song off the cd.
great song!
i believe this is about a girl whom everyone thinks is an angel, when she really isn't. and when the town finds out how bad she is, she covers it up with lie after lie to keep up this good reputation of hers.
I love how he pretty much yells "halo." And the strings in the background are pretty bad ass.
This is my favorite of Carl's solo songs, and that's pretty much entirely because of the strings.
I like your interpretation, plsygroundlove. I'd take it a step further and posit that the song might be about one or many of the American fallen teen queens, like Britney or Lindsay, who traded originally on their wholesome image & then blew it once they started getting photographed sans undergarments, etc.
yess this is also my favorite song! and i love how he yells the chorus too! so bratty. i have no idea what this song is about, but i like the lyrics! seem to make more sense than new pornographers.. i thought it seemed more about placing a lot of hype on one young girl, like she's the great hope of some small town or something. i guess 19 and counting would refer to her age..and 'truth to apology' would be the girl feeling sorry for not living up to everyone's expectations. 'topless, in new wings, free for the taking'..seems to imply that even though they are putting her up on a pedestal, they are also using her by placing all this weight and symbolism on her. so the whole 'love her to pieces' part is kind of an ironic tongueincheek bratty thing. i love the chorus, like a bunch of little kids who want to hear the mythical story again. so i think in the song, it seems the townspeople are the immature bratty ones who have no real regard for this vague female character they're talking about.
the teen queen thing sounds pretty valid too..though the mountain/mythology symbolism doesnt make me think of modern day urban pop culture. ac and np always had a retro feel to me.
The angel depicted in this song is obviously Christianity and how it is ever-changing to comply with society's psychological needs. That's why it's so widely successful--because there are so many denominations that most sheep can find a flock to follow. Most Christians are so proud and practice with blind faith--ignoring scientific facts and solid theories, never questioning their position or their corrupt religious leaders.

So true.
My dad always says, "Religion is the opiate of the masses." -- that's actually Marx.
It's easier and more fun disecting your foolish post filled with stereotypes and prejudice. I just love Atheists who think they have all the answers when it fact most are just insecure, angry, lost little boys/girls whose mommies and daddies didn't treat them well....so let's all blame God. Why not?! ...it's "so wildly successful because there are so many denominations that most sheep can find a flock to follow." So they are sheep if they belong to a church and share a belief in God and helping their fellow man? Hmmmmmm. They practice "with blind faith." Well, brain, faith is...

Well, brain, faith is always blind therefore it cannot be proved or disproved. (And I bet you believe in the possiblity of life on other plants but don't believe it God. How smug of you.) Did you say we "never question our corrupt religious leaders." Funny...Yes, once we know a pastor is corrupt we keep paying 'em and supporting them and, hey, we love having our hard-earned money stolen from us; our children molested; etc. Your daddy was probably a fool if he raised you cause you're an arrogant BIGOT, and I am sick of anti-Christian prejudice. Let's all stereotype and crucify Christians 'cause we atheists know everything. Heck, we're gods in our own minds!
"Our own girl Jesus" is clearly a reference to Game Theory's song "Like a Girl Jesus" - Carl is a big Game Theory fan.
