The Breaks Lyrics

"Lean forward slightly, Look straight at the speaker and listen with a sparkle in your eye as though you might be thinking, 'Gee this is the most wonderful thing I've ever heard in all my life'"

Back in the day, we were eye to eye
The thought of you had me runnin' wild
They say love lost will never grow
But hey, hey, hey I still love you so

Oh when we met you know the sun did shine
From your eyes back into mine
Oh if the sun is shinin' no more,
Hey, hey, I still love you so

I'll beg the moon and the stars above,
Bring me back my, that gal I love
I know you're gone, you're gone for sure,
But hey, hey, hey, I still love you so

My favorite Black keys song. The opening is fantastic, and i soulfully believe that is one of the greatest thing i have ever heard. Then when he starts to play.....man. The hugest smile spreads across my face and i am lost.

This song is insanely, ridiculously good.

My Opinion

First off, I think the beginning of this song is just plain hilarious. I don’t remember hearing it the first time I listened to it. In fact, it was probably the forth or fifth time before I really listened to the words.

Anyway, I think the meaning of this song is pretty straightforward. He’s still in love with this girl, presumably an ex-girlfriend, and the feeling isn’t going away. If anything it’s getting stronger – like an absence makes the heart grow fonder kind of thing. I like that he’s begging the moon and the stars. It reminds me of Starry Night and the optimism ad hope I find in that painting. Though despite the hope present in this song (because the guy obviously hopes she’ll come back), I find it extremely sad. I mean what sucks more than losing the one you love? Especially someone you feel so connected to. Them’s the breaks…
